Two of our favorite children's books ❤♾️

A Day With No Words - "Invites readers into the life of an Autism Family who communicates just as the child does, without spoken language. The story highlights the bond between mother and child and follows them on a day where they use a tablet to communicate with others."

My Brother Otto - "Follow the adventures of this lively crow and learn that even though he sometimes acts differently than other kids, he is really just a little crow who likes to play, learn, have friends, and be loved - just like you and me! This book is a wonderful tale about how love, acceptance, and a little understanding go a long way in helping us all see the world in a brighter shade of yellow."

Sensory integration is when all 8 sensory systems (yes 8!) work together to help the child be in a ready state of learning (aka regulated).

Every person has a unique sensory profile, as unique as your fingerprint.
👉Frequently referred to as a person’s "temperament" - how much sensory input a person can tolerate before a change is needed to neutralize that input.

We cannot expect a child to complete developmental tasks (such as COMMUNICATION) if they are having a difficult time regulating their sensory system. This is why therapists are informed about sensory processing. We assist the child in regulating their sensory system so we can build meaningful connections BEFORE expecting teaching of communication strategies to be effective.

👉Occupational Therapists are the specialists in sensory processing differences. These are the professionals that can assist individuals in evaluating and determining their unique sensory profiles. They provide recommendations to help regulate the sensory system when/if it is interfering with learning, development, and day to day tasks.

Did you know that on a daily basis we use a wide variety of language functions? Did you know that we express those language functions through various modes of communication? Why is this important to know? Let's break it down 🧐

Functions of Language
- express thoughts, feelings, ideas, and preferences.
- requesting
- ask/answer questions
- self advocate
- protest
- disagree
- arguing
- negotiating
- talk about experiences
- commenting
- socializing

Modes of Communication
- mouth words
- gestures
- body language
- eye gaze
- texts
- writing
- emojis

This is so important to us as SLP's because sometimes the goal isn't to get a child to only use mouth words. Sometimes we target multimodal communication (all modes of communication) to help the child be a successful communicator the best way they are able.

All modes of communication are valid and accepted with no one way being better than the other. 👏

At Smart Play Therapy, we believe in supporting the whole child—and the whole family. Our mission is not only to help children grow in their speech, language, and communication skills, but also to provide education, encouragement, and tools to empower caregivers along the way.

That’s why we’re so excited to share a special resource from one of our very own speech therapy moms!

✨Mommies Have Big Feelings Too!✨

This heartfelt children’s book, written by Marnie Buschur, is part storybook and part parenting tool. It reads as a loving conversation between a mother and child—with connection at the heart of every page. Written to help moms talk with their kids about everyone’s big feelings (including their own!), the book also includes a gentle "repair guide" for those tough moments when emotions run high and we’re not sure how to reconnect.

Inside, Marnie shares the real-life language and tools she’s used to model self-regulation, co-regulation, and emotional repair with her own children. It's a resource that aligns beautifully with our approach to family-centered care.

Marnie's career has always centered on helping others grow with a decade of experience working in higher education— she is a servant leader, trusted mentor, and she is passionate about helping people (big and small) feel seen and supported. Now a stay-at-home mom, she is gently weaving a life and career rooted in family, purpose, joy, and meaningful connections.

Mommies Have Big Feelings Too! is a simple, heartfelt resource for families navigating the ups and downs of early childhood—and a gentle, affirming tool. It’s something we’re proud to recommend to the moms in our community who are walking through the early years of parenthood with care and heart!

Recent statements from the U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services have hit the news and we can not sit in silence about it.

RFK stated “Autism destroys families and more importantly it destroys our greatest resource which is our children. Kids who will never pay taxes, they’ll never hold a job, they’ll never play baseball, they’ll never write a poem, they’ll never go out on a date, and they’ll never use a toilet unassisted.”

These extremely harmful statements treat autism like a disease to be feared, fuels stigma, shame, and ableism, and distracts from the real support that autistic people actually need.

Autism is NOT an epidemic and disability is NOT a crisis. Autism is a neurotype (brain difference). Autism is a complex spectrum. Some individuals have low support needs and some have higher support needs. An autistic person's support needs do NOT determine their worth as a human being in our society.

We will continue to support kids with compassion and not fear. We will continue to listen to autistic voices. We will NEVER stop advocating for inclusion, acceptance, and belonging!
