Born and raised in Marietta, Georgia, Dr. Lindsey Swanson Schriefer (Sh-ree-fer) earned an athletic scholarship to play softball at Georgia College & State University.

While there, she recognized the important role that the mind played in her own academic and athletic performance and fell in love with the field of psychology.

After graduating with a Bachelor's degree in psychology, Dr. Schriefer completed her Masters in Professional Counseling at Georgia State University. In her pursuit to further understand the nuances of the mind, Dr. Schriefer earned her doctorate of philosophy in Counseling Psychology at the University of Memphis.

Over the past decade, Dr. Lindsey has worked with many diverse clients in a variety of settings, including college counseling centers, inpatient hospitals, and private practice. She is passionate about working with individuals to enhance their performance across all areas of their lives, particularly in academics and sports.

Dr. Lindsey has worked with amateur, professional, and international athletes in a variety of sports to manage performance anxiety, improve communication with teammates and coaches, recover from injury, and cope with disappointment and failure. Much of her work with athletes involves strengthening their mental game to enhance their performance and reach their potential.

Dr. Lindsey enjoys life with her husband, two sons, and three dogs. She is an avid sports fan and has yet to find a sport she dislikes. When not watching or attending sporting events, Dr. Lindsey enjoys Olympic weightlifting and spending time outdoors. She also loves to travel and take on new adventures.

Dear Coaches…

Thank you. I know you put a ton of work into helping your athletes be great. You guys are all in. You love helping your athletes succeed and you feel the sting of disappointment when an athlete falls short of their potential. Most of you just want to do what you can to help your athletes be successful in the goals they set out to accomplish.

Here are our top tips for coaches that want to really take their coaching skills to the next level and help their athletes develop the mental skills to showcase the physical and technical ones they’ve been working on so hard.

Remember, there is no need to be perfect. It’s not something you expect of your athletes and it’s not something to expect of yourself. Make the mistakes and then own them. Use them as ways to show your athletes how to take responsibility, keep working to improve, and reaching for being better. Interested in working with us? Training is more active and intentional than practice.

In training, the focus is on quality over quantity and aimed at developing the discipline of a person.

You practice your habits, reactions, mechanics you already know and want to be automatic.

Want a good drill? Try this:
Set a timer to go off every 15 minutes during training and ask yourself: Is my mind focused on my current task or am I just going through the motions?

This will help shift you from practicing to training. The more consistently you’re in training mode, the greater your results.

Tag a training partner you want to try this with ⬇️

Each workout or game is an opportunity to gain information and insight as to HOW you can continue supporting yourself in your journey of progress and growth.

When you recognize that you are falling short from your typical performance or where you are aiming that day, take a step back. Redefine your version of success just for that day or workout. Afterwards reflect on areas you can address. Maybe you need more rest, maybe you are stressed or under fueled, or maybe it was just a bad day (those do happen!).

In your training, change those “Why” questions to “How” and “What” questions.

Instead of:
🔸”Why am I not as fast today as I was last time around?
🔸Why am I not able to lift the same weight?
🔸Why am I not beating my marker like in the last game?”

Change them to:
🔹“How can I meet myself where I’m at today?
🔹How can I make this workout worthwhile for me?
🔹What can I do right now that can give me the best chance of success?🔹 How can I interpret a victory from what I’m doing right now?”

Need help with this? We’re here. DM for info or follow the link in bio to learn about our self-guided 10 Essentials Course.

🚨 New BLOG: “Riding the Waves in Performance”

Here’s a preview…
Performance and improvement can sometimes feel like a linear process. You put in the time and effort consistently as a means to get closer to achieving your goals. It can be easy to get caught up demanding greatness from yourself based on the performance you last had.

“Since I was able to bench 185 lbs last time at the gym, I should be able to go for 215 lbs this time around, right?”

Your time and effort training, along with the consistency with which you do it, can sometimes lead you to thinking traps where you start interpreting your last performance as the immediate jumping off point for your next workout or task. However, this dynamic can often hinder, instead of enhance, your performance.

As you train and experience progress, you go through different seasons and chapters within that journey. You make progress more rapidly at certain times and more slowly at others. Although you are often moving in the right direction, it is definitely NOT a straight and even line.

Success in sport depends on three components:

1. your physical abilities
2. your sport-specific abilities
3. your mental abilities

When you are just starting out, the focus is on developing your physical abilities and your sport-specific abilities. As you progress in your athletic career and reach higher athletic levels, you MUST shift to focusing on developing your mental abilities. These mental abilities are what separate you from your competitors.

Usually, that part is left to you to figure out.

NOT ANYMORE.

A Letter to Parents of Athletes

Thank you for supporting your athlete! You want the best for your child and you do all that you can to help them achieve their dreams. This often means sacrificing time and money to drive your athlete to various training sessions, spending most weekends at competitions, and navigating the politics of youth sports.

As a sport psychologist, I work with a ton of athletes, all of which are striving to reach their potential. These are my tips for their parents to support them mentally and emotionally.

Want to train under pressure? Let’s blow the horn 📣

If you fear making a mistake and hearing the horn blow: train it. Have a coach, teammate, parent, or manager blow an air horn every time you make a mistake. Make that drill just when you make a mistake, or one time blow it when anyone on your team makes a mistake.

If you learn to focus through the noise you’re likely to find yourself performing with more calm than ever. A better, stronger, more zoned version of yourself.
