These are amazing words to remember. Thank you Robyn Gobbel - Attachment, Trauma, & Adoption for this information!!!

When I am focused on compliance, I'm coming from a place of fear.

I want something my way.

When I am focused on cooperation, I'm open to the reality that there are two people with their own valid and righteous wants and desires.

I'm not shaming the moments I fall into wanting compliance, but holding those moments in compassion and curiosity so I might be able to stay focused on cooperation in the future.

Just yesterday, I had a moment of being irritated because I wasn't getting compliance. Hey, I want what I want when I want it. 😉 Just like everyone else.

But when I'm most regulated, most in my owl brain, most connected to myself I don't feel the rigid need to make other people act the way I want them too. They can be them and I can be me. And we can be a we.

That feels better, actually.

What about you? How does wanting compliance versus wanting cooperation feel different in your body?

Greg Santucci, Occupational Therapist always has great information! Once again he found another quote that hits home! Punishment or teaching? What are your thoughts?

This showed up in my Facebook memories.

Once again, it really got me thinking about why we punish children.

Is it to "teach them a lesson"?
(Not sure if the lesson we're trying to teach is the lesson they're learning)

Is it because we have to prepare them for OUR adult world that we interact with OUR fully formed frontal lobes?

As a dad, I get it. Kids do things that can really frustrate us, drive us nuts, embarrass us... you pick the descriptor. But, the punishment doesn't help solve the problem.

Let's commit to getting out of the revenge business with our kids and students. Let's try to do better than 'you did something that made me mad, so I have to make you feel terrible in return'. Let's teach kods how to solve problems. Hard? Sure. Worth it? 100%

And it just feels better (for everyone).

As always, thank you L.R. Knost for your words of wisdom.

**NEW VIRTUAL GROUP STARTING JULY 20 EVERY OTHER WEDNESDAY**

Welcome to D&D Group Therapy! The group is facilitated by Grant Sparks (he/they), MS, and will consist of 4-6 individuals, each of whom is working towards their own therapeutic goals both in group and outside with an individual therapist.

The group will utilize Dungeons and Dragons, the classic table-top roleplaying game, as a medium for social interaction, problem solving, roleplay, and self-reflection using classic drama and narrative therapy techniques in a unique manner!

Each member of the group will create a character based around their personal therapy goals and utilize that character to process and experience events/scenarios that would be otherwise out of reach.

Your words matter.

My Grandmother always cooked tasty food. But one day, she put a burnt pie in front of my Grandpa.
Not just a little burnt, but black as coal.
I waited to see what my Grandpa would say.
But he just ate the pie n asked how my day was.
Then i heard my Grand Mother apologize to him for his dinner.
I'll never forget his response.
"Dear, i like ur pie."
Later, i asked him if he had told the truth.
He put his arm on my shoulder n said, "Ur Grandma had a tough day at work."
"She was tired."
"The burnt pie didn't harm me but, a sharp word could've hurt her."
We all make mistakes.
We shouldn't focus on mistakes but, support those we love.

INTEROCEPTION IS A SENSE THAT HELPS A CHILD KNOW WHAT IS GOING ON INSIDE THEIR BODY

Kids who struggle with the interoceptive sense may have trouble knowing when they feel hungry, full, hot, cold or thirsty. Overall they struggle with self regulation.

Do you ever wonder why you're compelled to yell? Guess what, it's not exactly because your kids aren't listening (even though it may feel that way).

While it's common to raise your voice and intensity of you don't feel your message is being received and understood, the root of yelling is often embedded in our own unmet needs and attachment wounds.

TEACHING CHILDREN SOCIAL SKILLS CAN BE JUST AS IMPORTANT AS TEACHING ACADEMICS

This is a great chart that shows social skills that children should be learning through interactions at school and at home.
