Babies enter the world with an immature nervous system, meaning they cannot regulate emotions, stress, or body functions on their own. In these early months, they rely on the adults around them to guide their emotional and physiological state.

When a parent is stressed, anxious, or overwhelmed, the baby’s nervous system mirrors that state. Their heart rate may rise, sleep can become fragmented, and stress hormones increase. The chaos adults feel becomes a storm within the child, shaping how their brain develops in response to stress.

Conversely, when parents remain calm, present, and regulated, babies experience the benefits too. Calm voices, gentle touch, and slow breathing help the child’s nervous system settle, promoting better sleep, improved digestion, and emotional security. This modeling teaches the brain how to recover from stress and build resilience over time.

The takeaway is simple but powerful: your emotional state is not just yours; it profoundly influences your baby. By nurturing your own calm and stability, you are literally shaping your child’s nervous system, teaching them how to manage emotions, respond to stress, and develop lifelong patterns of emotional regulation.

Newborn vision is naturally blurry, with babies able to see clearly only about 8-12 inches in front of them. This limited focus zone means infants rely heavily on other sensory cues to navigate their world and feel secure. The familiar scent and voice of their mother are critical signals that comfort them, helping the brain interpret safety and predictability.

These early sensory experiences activate neural pathways connected to bonding and emotional regulation. A baby recognizing a parent’s smell or hearing a familiar voice experiences reduced stress responses, more stable heart rates, and calmer breathing patterns. The brain interprets these cues as markers of safety, which fosters trust and attachment from the earliest days.

Because sight is still developing, repeated exposure to familiar voices and smells strengthens associative learning in the brain. Infants gradually connect these sensory signals with warmth, feeding, and protection, laying the foundation for secure attachment and emotional resilience.

Parents can maximize this early bonding by holding, speaking to, and gently interacting with their newborn. Even small, repeated gestures help the baby’s brain learn that their environment is safe, promoting healthy emotional and cognitive development from day one.

Our Story

We moved to 3417 Canton Road in Marietta in January 2018 after practicing on Cobb Parkway for over 20 years. We finally found the perfect building and location for our practice! We offer chiropractic care for the whole family, starting with the newborn to the mature senior adult. Dr. Kevin Wood specializes in spinal trauma, extremity adjusting (sports injuries) and orthotic fitting. Dr. Colleen Wood specializes in pregnancy care, newborns and children. Dr. David Williams joined our practice in November of 2018 as another chiropractor with over 20 years of experience. He specializes in functional medicine. We also have two massage therapists on staff. Greg Eisenberg specializes in sports and deep tissue massage and Deirdre Foley specializes in cranial sacral therapy and pregnancy massage. If you are looking for a family oriented practice, we have what you need. We hope to see you soon!
