The Independence Kansas Fire/EMS Department shared this photo this weekend as an important reminder of hot water burns.

"It’s not something people would immediately think of but with the unusually hot weather lately, it’s worth sharing," the department shares. "Two years ago, this baby suffered 2nd degree burns over 30% of his body from being accidentally sprayed with a garden hose and firefighters have issued a fresh warning recently."

Did you know that a garden hose exposed to direct sunlight during summer can heat the water inside the hose (not flowing) to 130-140 degrees Fahrenheit? This can cause burns especially to children and animals.

How can you use it safely? Let the water flow a few minutes to cool before spraying on people or animals.

As a burn survivor, I appreciate this share. Reminders are a step to prevention! I was scalded by hot water at 15 months in a different kind of accident. My body still carries the scars today.

Your baby wanting to be held all the time is not spoiled.

It’s human.
It’s normal.
It’s how they survive.

They just spent 9 months in the safest place they’ve ever known, your body. Constant warmth, constant heartbeat, constant comfort.

Now they’re out in a loud, bright, overstimulating world, and you?
You are home. You are safety. You are everything.

So if your baby cries when you put them down, if they need your arms to fall asleep, if they want to be on your chest 24/7—that’s okay. That’s not spoiled.

That’s attachment.
That’s bonding.
That’s exactly how it’s supposed to be.

Hold that baby. Wear them. Rock them. Let them be close.
