During the month of March, WCBDD proudly recognized Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month by reading Everyone Belongs to 510 first-grade students across five local school districts.

This meaningful book encourages children to embrace differences, show kindness, and understand that everyone has a place where they belong.

We extend our sincere thanks to the school administrators for welcoming us, the students for their curiosity and engagement, and our staff who continue to make this outreach one of their favorite traditions each year.

We were also happy to leave behind 25 copies of the book to continue promoting inclusion in the classroom. 💙

We had another great opportunity to celebrate Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month in our community! 💙

WCBDD Service and Support Administrator, Casey Mercer, visited Salem-Liberty Elementary at Fort Frye to read Everyone Belongs with students. Through this story, he shared an important message about inclusion, kindness, and embracing differences.

Thank you to Salem-Liberty for welcoming us and allowing us to be part of such meaningful conversations with your students—we appreciate the opportunity to share the message that everyone truly belongs!

Today, we had the pleasure of visiting Belpre schools, where our very own WCBDD Service and Support Administrator, Crystal Kingry, spent time reading “Everyone Belongs” to a group of amazing first graders. 💙

Crystal shared what it means to have a developmental disability—helping students understand that while people may be different, we are all more alike than we think. The students quickly picked up on the book’s rhyming pattern and were eager to participate, proudly sharing their names, their teachers, and even giving their teachers a well-deserved round of applause. 👏

What stood out most were the thoughtful questions and connections the students made. Several shared that they knew someone with similar differences, opening the door to meaningful conversations about inclusion, understanding, and kindness.

As Crystal shared, “This is always my favorite activity—first grade is such a great age!” And it’s easy to see why. Their curiosity, compassion, and engagement made for a truly memorable experience.

Thank you to Belpre Schools for welcoming us and helping us celebrate Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month by spreading the message that everyone truly belongs. 💙

📚💙✨ What a wonderful visit!

A big thank you to Fort Frye’s Beverly/Center Elementary for welcoming WCBDD’s Service and Support Administration Administrative Assistant, Susan Hill, into two first grade classrooms for a reading of “Everyone Belongs.”

The students were incredibly attentive and full of thoughtful questions! After the story, they eagerly shared their favorite characters, and had meaningful conversations about differences—like why some individuals use wheelchairs to get around and how others may use a tablet to communicate instead of their voice.

One of the sweetest moments? A student asking where she could get her very own copy of the book because she enjoyed it so much. 💙

Opportunities like this remind us how naturally children embrace inclusion when given the chance to learn and understand. We’re grateful to be part of these important conversations during Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month.
