Let’s continue the celebration of the heart!♥️
February is American Heart Month! As always, we’d like to highlight this remarkable and resilient organ by sharing information about it that many people may not have already known!
1. Heart cancer is exceptionally rare! This is because cardiac muscle cells stop dividing after birth. This limits the cellular replication that can lead to malignant mutations, making tumors in the heart far more likely to be benign or metastatic from other sites.
2. The heart contains its own neural network! The heart has approximately 40,000 neurons, forming a complex intrinsic nervous system often referred to as the “heart brain.” This allows the heart to process information, exhibit memory-like responses, and influence emotional states independently of the brain.
3. A separated heart can continue beating! Provided it receives sufficient oxygen and nutrients (such as in a laboratory setting or during transplantation procedures), the heart muscle can contract rhythmically even when completely removed from the body. This autonomy stems from its specialized pacemaker cells and self-contained electrical conduction system.
4. Silent heart attacks are more common than widely recognized! Approximately 1 in 5 heart attacks presents with minimal or no recognizable symptoms and may only be detected later through diagnostic imaging or testing. This highlights the importance of routine cardiovascular risk assessment.
5. Heart attacks exhibit a circadian pattern! Cardiovascular events, including heart attacks, occur most frequently between approximately 6am and Noon. This timing aligns with natural rises in blood pressure, increased blood viscosity, elevated stress hormones, and heightened platelet aggregability during morning hours.
