Obituary for Dr. Nelson Lynn Price...Rest in Peace Sir. You were a blessing to Marietta, GA.

Dr. Nelson Lynn Price, age 94, went home to be with the Lord on August 30, 2025. He is survived by his wife of 70 years whom he affectionally always called “Miss Trudy”. He leaves behind Lynn Hill, wife of Roger Hill, and Sharon Turner, wife of Randy Turner. Dr. Price is survived by four grandchildren, John Turner (Mary Kathryn), Beth McDaniel (Bradley), Ellen Strife (Jeremy) and Katie Meriwether (Jason), and seven great- grandchildren; Henry Turner, Mary Price, Bo, Evan and Will McDaniel, as well as Maya and John Meriwether.

Dr. Price served as the pastor of Roswell Street Baptist Church for 35 years. During that time the Lord grew the church to be one of the largest in the Southern Baptist Convention. For 25 of those years the Sunday morning worship known as “Come Alive” was broadcast locally on NBC Channel 11. In addition to regular church ministries there were also multiple community ministries including the Women’s Pregnancy Center and the Clay Home for u***d mothers, and the Roswell Street Baptist Christian School for pre-K through 5th grade.

Dr. Price also felt led to impact the greater Marietta and Cobb County area with motivational speaking in all the county high schools on many occasions, authoring over 20 books, writing a weekly column for the Marietta Daily Journal for over 50 years, plus praying for and maintaining positive relationships with as many political leaders as he could.

Dr. Price served on multiple Boards of Trustees and in various roles over time including the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, the Georgia Baptist Convention, the Southern Baptist Convention, and Shorter University in Rome, Georgia.

He lived his life based on his favorite Bible verse Colossians 3:23 “And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men.”

The Celebration of Life will be at Roswell Street Baptist Church in Marietta, Thursday September 4, 2025, at 2:00 pm. The family will receive visitors at the church from 12:30 to 2:00 pm.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to MUST Ministries, PO Box 1717, Marietta, GA, 30061, or the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, 3939 Gentilly Blvd, New Orleans, LA, 70126.

It's ! Pictured: (Left) William Rhadamanthus Montgomery and (Right) Henry Floyd Montgomery. Which beard is best?

These two brothers served proudly in the Confederate Army and were grandsons to James McConnell Montgomery, considered the first non-Indian settler of Atlanta. (Montgomery's Ferry)

If you’ve got a bearded ancestor with a story to tell, I’d love to see him—drop a photo and let’s celebrate together!

On August 27, 1964, Daphne Delk became one of the first black students to attend Marietta High School. She transferred from Lemon Street High School, marking a historic step in Marietta City Schools’ educational history.

I came across her oral history interview, completed by KSU students. It will be linked in the comments.

Her story was captivating. She was an incredibly brave young lady. She revealed her feelings about craving the best education available to her. She described how she earned the respect of her white classmates, not by trying to be their friend, but by proving herself academically. She worked hard to show that she deserved to be in their classroom too.

This one hurts... Obituary for Kit Kiefer... owner of Kiefer's Food & Spirits here in Marietta, GA. Now closed and warmly remembered. RIP Kit. ❤️🙏

Christian “Kit” Kiefer died on August 14, 2025 after suffering a brain injury. He was 71 years old.

Kit was born in Tucson, Arizona to Chris and Margaret Kiefer in 1954. In 1960, the Kiefers moved to Tarpon Springs, Florida, where Kit and his brothers, Nick and Max, were raised. Kit grew up sailing, diving, and developing a lifelong appreciation for Greek food and music. He was happiest when he was on the water.

In his early 20's, Kit moved to Georgia, where he spent the next 40 years. He first moved to Bainbridge, where he attended college and lived in a trailer that was completely destroyed by a tornado. Fortunately he was not hurt and felt the greatest tragedy was the loss of his record collection. After the tornado, Kit made his way up to Marietta, where he worked at Jimmy the Greek’s restaurant and met Martha Reilly when she came in with her coworkers for lunch. Kit and Martha married in 1979 and had two daughters, Claire and Kate.

In 1986, Kit opened Kiefer’s Food & Spirits, a restaurant that served as a beloved anchor of Marietta for almost 20 years.

After Kit sold the restaurant, he taught culinary school, worked in restaurant consulting, and ultimately landed in a research and development role at Schwan’s Food Service, Inc. Kit was inducted into the American Academy of Chefs in 2008. He served on the Board of Directors for the Research Chefs Association from 2008-2012 and was President of the Board from 2010-2012. Kit was a certified culinary educator and certified executive chef who received numerous medals in the culinary arts throughout his career.

In 2014, Kit left Georgia. He lived in Jupiter, Florida, Kansas City, Missouri, and spent the last two years of his life in St. Augustine, Florida.

It was a unique joy to see Kit in his element. He was a musician his entire life. Whether he was on stage with the Rock Bottom Blues Band or playing guitar in the living room, his deep love for music and the peace he felt while playing it was evident. Also, as an excellent chef, nothing brought Kit more pleasure than serving food he had made; it was his favorite way to show love, and he was most fully himself when he was in a kitchen. Kit’s internal compass was always oriented toward the water on which he grew up. He loved sailing with his brothers and walking his dogs on the beach.

Kind, sensitive, and tender-hearted, Kit was better at taking care of other people than he was at taking care of himself. Among the great loves of his life were the Allman Brothers Band and his notoriously disobedient beagle, Ignatius. Kit was one of a kind. He will be deeply missed.

Per Kit’s wishes, there will be no formal service. The family encourages you to donate to your local animal shelter or enjoy a nice dinner and some live music in his honor.

📖 Weekend find! While flipping through old books, I came across this gem tucked inside one that belonged to B.C. Yates—a souvenir placemat from Ed Shaws Restaurant near Shiloh Battlefield, Tennessee. I think he picked this up in the 1950s/60s. A picture I've found of the restaurant is from that time (check the comments).

Ed Shaws Restaurant wasn’t just a roadside stop; it was a beloved fixture for Civil War enthusiasts and travelers alike. It even served as a landmark for Boy Scout hikes like the Shiloh Artillery Trail, which began and ended near the restaurant.

Sadly, in 2020, the building was demolished after the National Park Service acquired the land. The site is now being reintegrated into the official battlefield interpretation. Did you ever eat at Ed Shaws?
