Did you know babies are born with way more neurons than they’ll actually keep? During the first few years of life, the brain goes through massive “synaptic pruning,” trimming unused connections to make neural networks more efficient.

By age 2–3, a child’s brain has about twice as many synaptic connections as an adult brain — making early childhood one of the most neurologically dynamic times of life!

It’s like the brain’s own version of spring cleaning… even in the middle of winter ❄️🧹

Dr. Penn was the first Black woman to serve as a director of an Institute at the National Institutes of Health—she served as deputy director of the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) and remains an inspiring role model to many women physician-scientists to this day.
She’s an emeritus professor, neurologist and physician!

Did you know that in 1848, a railroad worker named Phineas Gage survived a severe brain injury when a tamping rod damaged his frontal lobe. Although he recovered physically, his personality, behavior, and decision-making changed dramatically.
This injury revealed the critical role of the frontal lobe, the part of the brain responsible for judgment, impulse control, emotional regulation, planning, and social behavior.

Gage’s case helped scientists understand that different areas of the brain control different functions, laying the foundation for modern neuroscience.
