Did you know that just because a child breathes through their mouth, it doesn’t mean they’re a natural mouth breather? This behavior often develops due to oral-motor challenges rather than being a natural tendency. As a therapist, I focus on helping children strengthen their oral muscles and develop healthier breathing habits. I’m certified in TalkTools Level 3, which is rare in Los Angeles, allowing me to provide specialized support!

The tongue may appear larger in children with Down syndrome due to open-mouth posture and weak muscle tone. This can give the false impression of an abnormally sized tongue. Therapists focus on strengthening oral muscles and promoting closed-mouth posture to help improve this appearance. Want to know all the myths at once? Type “Myths” in the comments!

Tongue protrusion isn’t inevitable for kids with Down syndrome—it often happens due to improper feeding techniques where babies learn to push their tongues forward. Therapists work to improve feeding habits and muscle tone to reduce this behavior. At The Speech Studio, we are one of the few in California with Level 3 TalkTools training in oral motor placement therapy.
