Just a reminder that is a verb. We need to use our voices, our platforms, our bodies to help those who are struggling and suffering regardless of their faith, beliefs, skin color, age or economic status. Even if we don’t like them (maybe even more if we don’t like them). Everyone is deserving of love and everyone needs to help create more of it. As John in the New Testament explains, “Let us not love in word or in tongue, but in deed and in truth” (1 John 3:18). We’re all in a tumultuous moment, whether you celebrate or not, may you know that our salvation lies in community as well as communion. This was one of the most difficult ramadans I’ve experienced. The fasting was easy but the cruelty and pain in the world made it hard to transcend or stay inside the heart. And as someone who has just arrived in a new home, finding community was harder. Learning to be grateful for the lessons I learn in discomfort, learning to flow with obstacles, learning to to the Divine. It’s on my fridge here - -

Despite swimming laps in the pool every morning, until COVID, I was scared of swimming in the ocean. I’d get nervous as the waves approached, getting bigger and bigger until they broke and knocked me down. Then when all the pools closed, I realized I had to get over it. What I discovered is that when the wave approached m, the secret is to run towards it. Run and dive into the wave and swim out the other end. Then you get to the quiet place to swim. And when you’re getting out, the secret is to swim WITH the wave and let it wash you out. It was one of my best lessons about . Run towards it. Dive into it. Swim with it. Understand it. It’s a tool not an obstacle.
