🥛 Got a kiddo who seems to survive on mostly milk?

🥛Got a little munch bug who likes to guzzle, then run & play, leaving the rest of the food untouched? Milk can provide essential nutrients for kids, but when kids just guzzle & go, it doesn’t leave opportunities to explore new foods & become an adventurous
eater.

🥛Milk can cause a sudden decrease in appetite & desire for new foods, because…
It’s filling. I challenge you to drink a mere 8 ounces of milk in the span of a few minutes. That’s less
volume than a typical tall latte & your stomach has a greater capacity for more. Yet, you’ll feel pretty
full, almost immediately. Same for kids – they go from hungry to satisfied in a matter of minutes.

🥛💩Milk can be constipating if kids are drinking a lot. Constipation shuts down appetite, especially for new
foods.

😳Too much milk can also impact iron absorption.

🤦🏼‍♀️What to do? If your child can self-regulate milk & sips on it while eating the other food, then no worries! But if they are too dependent on milk to fill little bellies, then serve low-fat milk in a small
straw cup with a thin straw, so it’s not as easy to guzzle. When it’s gone, there’s still water & water can be refilled. Parent mindfully & compassionately: “You do love milk! We will have some more with dinner.”

🥛What about snacks? Limiting milk to mealtimes helps kids focus on trying a variety of snacks. But, if you need a quick boost of energy, a small carton of milk with a straw is a terrific snack on the go.

👉🏼Remember, snacks are small with no seconds. A few cookies or some nut butter & safely-sliced pieces of apple are all delicious editions if milk is going to be the primary source of energy at snack time.

👉🏼🥛The AAP recommends just 16 to 20 oz of milk for kids ages 2 to 5. Other dairy foods or dairy substitutes can be fine alternatives. It’s pretty simple: Lots of water, a bit of milk/milk substitute & plenty of variety of other foods. That’s it!

Let’s talk about functionality…This looks different for everyone, but these are my top words to work on first! 🗣❤️

Often parents/caregivers think they have to drill colors, numbers and all the skills highlighted in common toys or books. Let’s squash that and reinforce functional language.

What are some first words that you work on with minimally verbal children?

These products can make us feel that babies are working on these skills by "standing" in an activity center or "sitting" in a floor seat, however, containers actually prevent little ones from sitting or standing in correct alignment and can result in an inability to activate important muscles. Equipment can hinder the development of skills and place inappropriate stress on developing bones and joints - placing the child at risk for other injuries.🌱

I often refer babies that are pre/post frenectomy for craniosacral therapy. I have seen amazing results when done in conjunction with the myofunctional therapy and myofascial release that I provide at my office.

👌🏼The squish test is a required test! Always give a piece of every food a squish between your thumb and forefinger & ask yourself:

🤔Can baby break this down completely with their gums?
🤔How likely is this to lodge in my baby’s airway if they lose control of this food?

🍇It’s true for some foods for our older toddlers to age four too! Firm round foods like grapes, tomatoes, chickpeas etc should ALWAYS be quartered or squished until your child has a larger airway and the attention to manage foods at mealtimes. Yep, that’s age four for those foods. Thank you for always taking the time to squish or cut safely.

Our Story

Sheri Isaacson started Communication Cabin sixteen years ago while living in a log home. Sheri has been providing speech therapy for over 20 years. Sheri is an ASHA-certified and licensed Speech-Language Pathologist. She is also a Certified Orofacial Myologist, Certified Infant Massage Instructor, and Certified Lactation Counselor.

Sheri enjoys working with infants through adults with orofacial myofunctional disorders, feeding issues, and speech delays. She is experienced in pre/post frenectomy myofunctional therapy and will work closely with your preferred provider.

Sheri and her family recently relocated to beautiful Town of Peshtigo, Wisconsin, just minutes from Marinette. She will see clients in her office. The office is located in the only remaining cabin of the former WeHaKee all-girls summer camp. It is a perfect fit that Communication Cabin is now located in a former cabin.
