Thursday was a great evening to celebrate our Academic Excellence Awards recipients at MHS. I had the privilege of presenting the Academic Excellence Award in EMT to Emma O’Neil and the Distinguished Titan Award to Talma Parker. A great accomplishment for these two students who are both on their way to become a Paramedic !!!

Thursday evening was a day of Celebrating our students at McDowell Technical Community College. MTCC Board of Trustees presented our NC SKILLSUSA EMT state winners Payton Teague & Autumn Slone 2nd Place and Chyenne Kelley & Sierra Kelley Parker 5th Place with a certificate and plaque. This was our 1st year competing at the College Level and was Blessed to have both teams on stage as SKILLSUSA Winners. Congratulations!!!

This year NC SKILLSUSA looked a little different for MHS and myself. We did not send any EMT Teams to compete on the High School Level this year, but… we did have 4 of our very own students compete at the College Level or Post secondary and represented McDowell Technical Community College and the 1st time MTCC competed at SKILLS. These 4 former MHS EMT students competed against some of the best community colleges in the state. They proved why McDowell is the BEST!!! Payton Teague & Autumn Slone took 2nd Place, Cheyenne Kelley & Sierra Kelley Parker placed 5th Congratulations to all 4 and McDowell Technical Community College..

It is always a Blessing to have your former students return home for a few days and make it a point to visit their old teacher for a while. Congratulations to our 2023-2024 EMT Class Captain, Ms. Karley Bolick. Karley was selected by an interview panel consisting of MHS Administration, EMS personnel and former EMT class officers. Captain Bolick was recognized at our EMT Officer Pinning Ceremony on Nov. 21st 2023. Capt. Bolick was pinned by her mother and father, Dana & Joey Bolick. Monday Night Aug. 14th 2023, McDowell County Board of Commissioners and McDowell Emergency Services Director William Kehler recognized our McDowell High/McDowell Tech. EMT National SKILLSUSA Winners.

Capt. Payton Teague & EMT student Emma O’Neil placed 2nd in the Nation in Atlanta Ga. the week of June 19th- 24th. Teague & O’Neil scored an impressive 978 points out of a possible 1000, which in turn was just shy of a 1/4 of a point from a 1st Place win.

This is our 3rd time competing at Nationals in EMT. 2019, Capt. Harlie Laws Price was our 1st student to ever compete at this level, the competition was a demonstration only then, but Harlie would have placed 1st in the High School division had their been a Championship at that time. Harlie was featured in the EMS World Magazine July 2019 edition. Last year 2022, our team of Capt. Autumn Slone & Chyenne Kelley placed 5th in the National EMT Competition.

So great things are happening here in McDowell County. Teague & O’Neil we’re each presented a National SKILLSUSA Plaque, National SKILLSUSA framed Competitors Certificate, a fully stocked EMT Jumpbag, along with a pulse ox, glucometer, and thermometer and 2 MTCC Coffee Mug.
Congratulations to both students.

Day 2 of National SKILLSUSA for these 2 MHS/MTCC EMT students Payton Teague & Emma O’Neil is in the books. A long day of orientation, jump bag check-in and inventory, 2 written tests have added to a fun filled day of walking 15-20 thousand steps 😭😬.. But they are gaining a lifetime worth of experience and knowledge. They said we miss Marion already… 🫢LOL..
