2026: Progress That Sticks
From Mackenzie
January is all about setting goals—looking ahead and preparing for a new year. However, as mentioned in the prior post, statistically speaking, most goals are not achieved. So, in combination with that post, let’s talk about how to set goals properly—in a way that gives us a much higher chance of actually achieving them.
Goal setting is a powerful practice because it provides direction and control, helps maintain or increase motivation, and builds competency along the way. For example, if your goal is to run a mile, you learn to understand what it actually takes to get there—you don’t just wake up and do it; you build toward it.
Understanding these goal types gives you the foundation needed to build goals that actually support your desired outcome.
Outcome Goals
These focus on the final result—the long-term destination. Example: “I want to lose 40lbs by the end of this year.”
Performance Goals
These are the milestone goals you work toward while chasing the outcome. Examples: dropping a pant size by May, running a mile by June, increasing your squat max by 5 lbs each month.
Process Goals
These focus on the daily or weekly actions required for success. Examples: working out three times a week for 30 minutes, meal prepping, prioritizing sleep.
Once you know what goals you're setting, the next step is making sure they're well designed.
Use the acronym CONQUER to ensure your goals include all the necessary components (refer to the attachments to see it broken down). You can confidently say, "I will CONQUER this goal" as you go. Along with the CONQUER acronym being broken down, you will find templates that will help you write out all three types of goals. I am challenging you to write at least 3 Outcome Goals. Your timelines can vary in each goal, but try to have at least one goal to achieve throughout the whole year (ex. either a 1-year from now goal or your goals are broken up to last throughout the year). Don't rush your goals, but don't play it safe either. Challenge yourself... as goals are meant for.
Bethany Hamilton said, "People can do whatever they want if they just set their heart to it, and never give up, and just go out there and do it."
She also stated, "I don't need easy, just possible."
Welcome to 2026 everyone!!
