Sacred Space Doula Care

Sacred Space Doula Care I am a doula. What is a doula (a question I get asked much too frequently)?

A doula is support, service, care and education for your pregnancy labor delivery and postpartum.

This reminds me so much of my birth with Soraija (home unassisted). My contractions never got closer than 5 minutes apart. My water broke around midnight and everyone was excited saying she was going to be here soon. I quickly told everyone to settle, that we had hours to go still because my contractions were still so spaced... She was born 20 minutes later :)

Woohoo!!! This doula is on cloud 9!!!!! First successful TOLAC (trial of labor after cesarean) of the year. Mama and baby are doing beautifully!

Now where's my doula hangover food!

Yes!!!!!
02/23/2026

Yes!!!!!

.
Heal? Yes.
Recover? Yes.
Integrate? Yes.
Prioritize health? Yes.

But try to look or feel like they never happened? Like body, mind, heart, soul wasnโ€™t ripped wide open and brought to challenge, beauty, and heights it never knew possible? Like the Cross was just for show? Like the transformation of motherhood is a liability?

Nah.

No time for that. Give us the transformation.

(And yes, applies well beyond just pregnancy and birth here.)

Wow that is an amazing picture of breastfeeding!!

Wow that is an amazing picture of breastfeeding!!

๐Ÿผ๐Ÿซถ๐Ÿฝ This is a lactating breast. Not cysts. Not inflammation. Not โ€œtoxic buildup.

Those little bubble-looking spaces?

Theyโ€™re called alveoli and theyโ€™re where milk is made. โœจ

Breasts are made up of thousands of tiny milk-producing sacs, clustered into lobules, all connected by a branching highway of ducts ๐Ÿ›ฃ๏ธ๐Ÿงฌ that carry milk toward the ni**le.

When milk is present, those alveoli can look:
๐Ÿ’งrounded
๐Ÿ’งpale or white
๐Ÿ’งfull and distended

That white youโ€™re seeing?
๐Ÿฅ› Thatโ€™s milk.

Not stored in one big โ€œreservoir.โ€

Not sitting in pockets.

Milk is made continuously in these tiny sacs and released when your body gets the signal, like baby suckling, hand expression, pumping, touch, even thinking about your baby ๐Ÿ’ž

๐ŸŒธ A few important things most people were never taught:

๐Ÿฉธ Breasts are highly vascular, especially in pregnancy and lactation. All that blood flow supports milk production.
๐Ÿง  Milk ejection is hormonal, not mechanical. Oxytocin matters. Safety matters.
๐Ÿ“š This anatomy is normal. Functional. Brilliant.

So if youโ€™ve ever seen images like this labeled as โ€œdisease,โ€ โ€œabnormal,โ€ or โ€œconcerningโ€โ€ฆ thatโ€™s not your body being wrong, thatโ€™s education being missing.

โœจ Your body doesnโ€™t fail at feeding.
โœจ Your breasts arenโ€™t broken.
โœจ This system has sustained human life for thousands of years.

Milk-making isnโ€™t simple.

Itโ€™s alive, responsive, and powerful.

And it deserves to be understood, not feared. ๐Ÿซถ๐Ÿฝ๐Ÿผ

โ™ฅ๏ธThis is a conceptual illustration, not a literal or to-scale image of breast anatomy. Itโ€™s meant to show how milk-producing structures relate to ducts and blood supply, not what you would see in a real dissection. The physiology is real but the proportions are illustrative like what we would see in medical education all the time because real anatomy is too small, complex, and layered to photograph clearly sometimes. We often use illustrations in anatomy textbooks, lactation education, and physiology lectures.โ™ฅ๏ธ

Postpartum depression is a liar.

It will tell you that youโ€™re a failure.

It will tell you that youโ€™ll just keep messing up.

It will tell you youโ€™re not a good mom.

It will hold on tight to you with guilt and shame, whispering that youโ€™ve made a mistake.

None of those things are true.

You are a good mom. You didnโ€™t make a mistake. You arenโ€™t a failure. You just support and care and treatment, so that you can see through the lies and feel better again.

If you need help and support:
๐ŸŒธ Call or text the National Maternal Mental Health Hotline at 1-833-852-6262
๐ŸŒธ Call or text the Postpartum Support International HelpLine at 800-944-4773
๐ŸŒธ For a crisis situation, call or text the National Su***de & Crisis Lifeline at 988

Ha! That's kinda funny. Anyone tried this? Did it help?

Have you heard of or tried this pumping "hack?" If you're struggling with pumping, covering the collection containers can help take off the visual pressure of pumping. This may help you relax more fully and allow your milk to flow more easily.

[Image Description] Photo of a parent using a breast pump with baby socks covering the collection containers. Text reads, "using baby socks on your collection containers can help reduce stress and increase the amount of milk expressed."
