Happy National Assisted Living Week!

This week, we celebrate the caregivers, staff, and residents who make assisted living communities feel like home.

At the heart of this celebration is the belief that everyone deserves to age with dignity, comfort, and compassion right where they are.

🤝 That’s where hospice care comes in.
By partnering with assisted living communities, hospice helps residents stay in a familiar, loving environment while receiving expert medical, emotional, and spiritual support.

Together, we’re honoring lives, supporting families, and helping more people age in place with grace.🫶🏼

The theme for this National Assisted Living Week is “Ageless Adventure.” Our work regularly gives us a front row seat to the way these communities empower residents to stay active, engaged, and supported. If you have a family member or loved one in assisted living, we encourage you to spend time with them discovering the things that have brought meaning to their lives.

The entire Heartland team is thrilled to welcome Emily Florence, RN, as our new patient care manager for the Marion branch. Emily has been with us for over a year as an on-call nurse and has stepped into her role as our PCM. When asked why hospice, she stated, “I love being a hospice nurse because it allows me to provide comfort, dignity, and compassion during one of the most vulnerable times in a person’s life. Supporting patients and their families through the end-of-life journey is a deep honor, and I find purpose in helping them feel seen, heard, and cared for. It’s a privilege to walk alongside people during these sacred moments and offer both clinical care and emotional support.”

Congratulations on your new, well-deserved position!
Emily, thank you for being a light in the lives of so many.

A huge thank you to Sandy Magers for such a kind recommendation of Heartland Hospice. It is truly such an honor to care for your mom and be alongside her journey.

“Hi, my name is Sandy, and Joyce is my mother. She is at Wesleyan Health nursing home. I just wanted to take a minute to let you know how happy I have been with all of the services we have received from Heartland Hospice. I was skeptical at first because I always thought hospice was for people who were close to death. Alyvia, the girl who helped me get mom enrolled at Heartland, is great too. Anytime I have a question, I just shoot her a message and she gets me an answer right away. She is so easy-going and great to work with. She was my first contact at Heartland and helped me decide if Heartland Hospice would be good for my mom. My mom is almost 94 and does have some problems, but she is not on her deathbed. So I decided to give Heartland a try anyway. I want to give kudos to your staff and hope you pass the compliments along to them. Andrew, the pastor at Heartland, is a super great guy. He always calls me after his visits with mom and gives me an update. He’s learned to take cookies or cupcakes and coffee to her on his visits because she does have a little mean streak in her and doesn’t like to be messed with. So Andrew has learned his way around her grouchiness. Jenn, her nurse, where do I begin? She is the absolute best nurse I’ve ever come across. She is so caring and thoughtful about mom‘s needs. She always calls me after each visit, and they aren’t just calls to see if your mom‘s doing OK. She goes into detail about mom and her care. I haven’t been able to visit my mom because of an injury to myself, so Jenn offered to FaceTime so I could see my mom. She also sent me a picture of herself and my mom, which brought tears to my eyes. I know it seems like I’m rambling, but I wanted to tell you how thankful I am that I decided to go with Heartland Hospice. You have a wonderful staff! Thank you, Sandy.”

Many families are confronted with difficult conversations and decisions regarding ongoing care for loved ones. It is normal to feel difficult and conflicting emotions about this, including guilt. You may be facing a no-win situation.

Understand why you are experiencing guilt. Acknowledge these feelings and thoughts and accept that there will be uncertainty and discomfort with this change. Affirm yourself and the ways you are meeting your responsibilities.

A huge thank you to Derek Vincent for coming all the way from Illinois to talk to Miller's Merry Manor in Logansport about coping with caregiver guilt.

As always, we are available 24/7 at (765) 206-3633.
