🌸 Shine Family Spotlight: Mona’s Journey 🌸

A year ago this September, Mona faced the unimaginable—losing her beloved mother suddenly and unexpectedly. 💙 In the midst of her grief, she had to leave everything she knew behind and transitioned into a temporary AFL placement.

Not long after, she met Janice, who soon welcomed her into her own home as an AFL.

Just a few months later, in December, Janice also lost her mother suddenly. Out of shared heartbreak, something beautiful was born—two women helping each other heal, finding purpose, and reminding one another that they weren’t alone.

Janice said it best:
“I feel like we’ve helped each other through the same kind of loss. With Mona losing her mom in September, and me losing mine in December, we’ve walked through it together. Mona was the reason I kept going, giving me a purpose after losing the most important person in my life.”

Thursday, Mona honored her mom’s memory with a beautiful balloon release—a heartfelt way to celebrate her life and the love they shared. 🎈💙 Surrounded by her Shine family and the support of Janice, it was a moment of remembrance, healing, and hope.

Today, Mona is flourishing. She has grown in strength, joy, and even achieved incredible personal milestones like her health and weight loss journey—with Janice supporting her every step of the way. 🌟

Mona is the sweetest soul with the happiest smile, and her story is a reminder that even in life’s hardest moments, love and connection can create a new chapter filled with light.

We are so proud of you, Mona, and grateful for the way you and Janice embody the heart of the Shine family. 💙✨

🍎✨ Fun at the Apple Orchard! ✨🍎

Buddy and Lois joined Amy yesterday for a sweet outing to Apple Hill Orchard in Morganton! From fresh apple cider slushies 🥤 to warm apple donuts 🍩 and crunchy dried apple chips 🍏—they enjoyed all the best fall flavors.

There’s nothing better than good friends, good food, and a beautiful day under the orchard pavilion. 🌿

✨ Spotlight on Shine: Beth ✨

It truly takes a village to support our Shine family, and we are so grateful for the creative hearts on our team! 💚

Beth is one of our go-to’s when it comes to sewing, decorating, and bringing dreams to life. Not only is she an amazing AFL provider, she’s also a talented costume maker.

Recently, Victoria shared her love for Brave and its fiery-spirited main character, Merida. Another staff member found a dress, Shine helped gather the fabric and buckle, and Beth worked her magic to transform it into a custom Brave-inspired gown.

The look on Victoria’s face says it all — dreams do come true when you have a Shine village behind you. 🌟

Our Shine crew had an incredible time BO's Bodacious Entertainment in Lenoir, NC. Huge shout-out to their staff for making our day so special! 🙌

Outings like this give our individuals the chance to enjoy being out in the community as a group—building friendships, practicing social skills, and experiencing the joy of inclusion. 💙💚

Bowling is not only fun, but also a great way to support hand-eye coordination, focus, movement, and teamwork. From the cheers for every strike and spare to the encouragement when the pins didn’t quite fall, the smiles and laughter said it all.

A special thank you to our new Activities Director, Alexis Hunter, for planning this fantastic outing. We are so grateful for everything you’re doing to help our Shine family connect, grow, and Shine Bright! ✨

At Shine, we believe these moments of connection and growth are just as important as the memories made along the way. 💫

✨ Meet the Team: Adam ✨

If you’ve ever caught your camera roll mysteriously filled with selfies, chances are Adam’s been nearby. 🤳🤣

Known for his sense of humor and can-do attitude, Adam has been with Shine for a year and was recently promoted to Day Program Supervisor!

In his role, Adam oversees the daily operations of our day program, managing staff, supporting individuals with disabilities, facilitating activities, and ensuring safety and compliance. His leadership style is hands-on, encouraging, and always supportive — the kind of teammate who lifts others up.

Outside of Shine, Adam is a devoted husband and proud dad of four. He loves fishing, enjoying good food (a filet mignon medium rare is his favorite!), and he’s the go-to guy if you ever need something mechanical fixed — from cars to ATVs to motorcycles. 🛠️

We’re grateful for Adam’s leadership, humor, and heart. He keeps things running smoothly while making sure everyone around him feels supported and valued. 💙
