Death Doula Sandy - Guide in Death, Dying and Grief

Death Doula Sandy - Guide in Death, Dying and Grief End of Life Doula, Eldercare Doula, Grief Recovery Specialist My name is Sandy Batterman and I live in Marion, Illinois. What is a Death Doula? Sandy

My business name is Neutral Ground Emotional Healing, let me tell you about it. I am a Certified End of Life and Elder Care Doula and Certified Grief Recovery Specialist. First, I will say my services are not limited to the Elderly. Anyone at ANY stage or age that are in need of these services are encouraged to call me. I’ll start and end with the emotional healing because our internal well-being is the utmost importance no matter where or what part of our lives we are in. As long as I can remember I’ve wanted to help people live better lives by processing and healing the emotions that enter and exist in our everyday lives. I, like many have experienced many challenges through my life and it has taken me a long time to heal what I’ve experienced including my thoughts, patterns and life limiting beliefs. I had help in doing so and am extremely grateful to have the peace I do today. Isn’t the whole goal to live the best life we can? I don’t mean just accepting what happens in our lives, I mean recognizing how we feel about those things and allowing ourselves to process what is true to us, what is real to us and what does and doesn’t work for us. At times this is not easy to do, in fact emotional healing can be extremely painful, that’s why it’s not on the top of our “to-do” list for sure. What I can tell you though is getting to a point of loving yourself, knowing what that means and to do so every day brings peace and joy that are indescribable. I’ll speak more at the end about how I can help you feel better – be better and live better. A Death or End of Life Doula is a non-medical professional that provides holistic support for the dying and their loved ones before, during and after death. Trained in the various end of life stages a doula is able to assist the family with understanding the natural processes while providing comfort and support. We recognize dying as a part of the normal process of living and focus on the quality of life for individuals and their loved ones. We fill the gap with the medical team. Hospice is amazing in the care and service they provide, however they can have limited time to spend with patients. Doula’s provide additional support for the patient and their families without time limits and we serve as the eyes and ears for the hospice program. Doulas support both the patient and the hospice team together. We also can support you BEFORE hospice. Hearing that “hospice” has been called in immediately takes our thoughts to “only a matter of days”. In a lot of cases that is true, but it doesn’t have to be. I help to educate what options are available before you need them, supplying the most information for you to make the best choices without fear and to receive the best possible care you need. There is a long list of what we do and can do. Nearing end of life or receiving a terminal diagnosis is a terrifying time with unlimited emotions, fears and questions. I am here to guide you and your family through the process and beyond. My goal is to help create the most positive and peaceful end of life experience possible. Elder Care Doula - Everyone desires to stay as independent for as long as we possibly can, as we age, we need more help with Activities of Daily Living and Elder Doulas can fill this gap. There are 73 million baby boomers today, the last of this generation is turning 60 in 2024. There is and will be an increasing need for helping people as they age. Services in this area include but are not limited to in home visits and safety checks. Accessing needs for help and being companions for daily tasks. I accompany and can transport to medical appointments and advocate if needed, keeping family and/or care members informed if unable to attend. Assist with appointment making, prescriptions, billing questions and more. We develop a relationship now, create a living well plan with as much independence as possible for as long as possible. Planning and a little help now can go a long way to stretching that independence. Grief and Emotional Healing:

Grief is the normal and natural emotional response to change or loss of ANY kind. Death, divorce, moving, financial changes, health changes, and on and on. Grief is also the result of unmet hopes, dreams and expectations and the loss of intangible concepts such as safety, trust, security, faith and more. Grief is universal and there are no rules. Grief is a mis-understood and a much-underrated emotion. We are not taught as a society in how to grieve, or that it is ok and necessary for us to grieve. It’s uncomfortable right? How long will it last? Does time really heal grief? When should I seek help? I think you get the idea that grief is emotional and not all that pleasant and it can affect us at any point in our lives if we don’t process it. I offer two forms of support for Grief. The Grief Recovery Method developed by the Grief Recovery Institute. GRM is an action based & educational step by step program to process what we have not been taught how to process and complete our grief. This is an 8-week course that I will guide you through that will enlighten you with self-discoveries, potential patterns while learning how to complete the grief. For those not ready for a structured course and NEED HELP NOW or at any given point, I offer one-on-one meetings. I will holistically guide you through those feelings to help better understand and process how you’re feeling and what to do with those feelings. This is a non-clinical offering; I’ll meet you where your heart is and work toward the healing. Now back to the emotional healing. Unprocessed emotions can affect us in many different ways at any given time. Studies show that unprocessed emotions can lead to physical ailments such as stomach issues, immune disorders, anxiety, depression, back issues and more. It can also lead us to searching for our next “feel good” moment or not feeling anything moment, some turn to additive behaviors or worse. Grief is a big part of emotional healing because we grieve over every change in our lives whether we realize it or want to admit it. We’ll meet one-on-one and I’ll guide you through those feelings that need attention. Life can be complicated but does it have to be that hard? I don’t think so, let me help you discover that too. I thank you for taking the time to read about me and my business, please like my page and do share it with anyone you think could benefit from my services. There is so much more to say and I look forward to working and serving our community and beyond!
