Carlos Machicao, CRNA is retiring today from Marion Eye Surgery Center after 38 years of practicing eye anesthesia and 59 years total practicing as a Nurse Anesthetist. Over the years, he has worked at many of the hospitals in Southern Illinois. He graduated from nursing school at Mt. Carmel school of Nursing and subsequently from St. John's School of Anesthesia in Springfield in 1964. He has touched many lives with his tremendous knowledge, steady hands, charming personality, and witty humor. He will forever be remembered as a loving friend and an anesthesia legend. To know him is to love him! Marion Eye Surgery Center wishes him the best of luck in his retirement and with all of his future pickle ball endeavors!

Let's take the last few days of Women's History Month to celebrate women in Eyecare. 🎉🎊

"Gertrude Stanton was the first woman to receive a license to practice optometry in the United States. She was born in Iowa in 1863 and began her early career as a teacher. Dedicated to helping others, she moved to Minnesota to learn optometry to help people achieve visual clarity. In 1899, Stanton applied for her optometry license and was the first woman to gain licensure in the United States. After receiving her license, she worked as an in-store optometrist at Dayton's Department Store, saving money to establish her own practice. Stanton went on to run her own optometry business, employing a team of women. She gained success through her perseverance, dedication to the field and creative marketing that garnered statewide attention.

In the four decades since Marion Eye Centers & Optical first opened their doors in 1974, they’ve grown into a multi-specialty ophthalmological practice providing comprehensive medical, surgical and optical services to the communities of southern Illinois and southeast Missouri. Known for their commitment to keeping pace with cutting-edge technology, Marion Eye Centers & Optical provides their patients with the skilled expertise necessary to treat every eye disorder and disease.

Founder Dr. M. Ahmad realized early on that in order for Marion Eye Centers & Optical to offer patients the highest quality, most effective treatments for their vision, it was imperative to have the latest technology in-house. As such, MEC maintains on the premises the most advanced lasers and diagnostic equipment available, putting them ahead of even the nation’s largest metropolitan area practices.
