Yesterday I got to sit with a newly postpartum mom. 🥰

Postpartum appointments are always so sweet because we are wrapping up so many months of support and closing the chapter of prepping for birth (for now😉).

Being a doula at these appointments means listening. It means getting the long version of the story when I ask how you’re doing. It means grieving the birth that didn’t go according to plan. It means celebrating your baby’s milestones. It means doing your dishes. It means telling you how proud I am of you. It means making sure you’re okay.

What a joy to have the honor of sitting with families in such a special, holy season 🤍🌸

Quality birth support looks like:
- a massage in between contractions
- little reminders to eat and drink
- suggestions for position changes
- creating a calm atmosphere
- believing that you can even when fear starts to set in
- helping you understand your options
- dimming the lights
- counter-pressure
- teamwork with your partner

You deserve to be heard, to ask questions, to change your mind, and to FEEL supported. 💛

Even though this birth didn’t go exactly as planned and a c-section became necessary, it was beautiful example of the whole birth team all working together to provide the best support possible for these parents and their sweet baby. I’m grateful that I could continue providing care even through a c-section. Congratulations to this family 🩷

After starting this career, I’ve grown personally, emotionally, and spiritually more than I was expecting. There have been many high highs being a doula, but also some lows too. There have been births that don’t go according to plan, babies that need extra support, and unexpected hardships. It’s been really stretching to have a such lack of control in any of these situations or have an inability to make it better.

I am learning that Jesus is in control of every detail. He is our sustainer, the Giver of Peace, the one who restores our soul, the one who gives us not a spirit of fear but of power, love, & a sound-mind. The one who protects and gives us breath in our lungs. The one who has a plan and a purpose for our life. The one who gives us courage in really hard moments.

Out of these gifts the Lord shows us, I am learning how to respond in situations I can’t control. I am reminding myself daily that what I can do is show up, love, remain in a spirit of thankfulness, shine the light of Jesus, and have community around me that encourages me. 💛

There has been so much growth and change this year. I’m so grateful for the opportunity to start my doula business and do something I am so passionate about. As much as it’s been good, it’s been hard and stretching. I’ve experienced so many moments outside of my comfort zone, and looking back, I’m grateful for who they’ve made me to be.

Thank you to the mentors, friends, nurses, and birth professionals that have encouraged me in this work & thank you to all my sweet clients who have entrusted me to walk beside them through their pregnancy and birth✨🤍
