The Art of Unhurried Living

Make time to savor the simple moments in life.
Step outside without a destination.

Let your feet find their own rhythm.
Take walks not shaped by exercise or efficiency.

Notice the quiet conversations of birds,
the familiar beauty along paths you have always walked.

A slower pace asks for your presence.
It invites you to feel the day unfolding
instead of racing past it.

In slowing down,
you begin to hear your own thoughts more clearly,
and, sometimes,
the gentle hush beneath them.

There is a richness in unhurried living,
where time becomes a place you inhabit,
not something you hurry through.

When you choose to slow down,
you create space
for these moments
to find you.

A Willingness to Keep Showing Up

I step into this new year
gently, without resolutions,
with just a simple willingness,
to keep going,
to keep moving forward.

Not the bright, declarative kind of decision
that arrives with banners and promises,
but the quieter kind,
the one that asks for nothing grand.

No transformation.
Just an honest effort
to place one foot in front of the other,
without needing it to be a victory march.

To keep going isn’t strength.
It’s letting the days arrive as they are,
some heavy,
some hollow,
some unexpectedly kind.

It’s allowing grief, fatigue, memory, and love
to share the same room,
without insisting that any of them leave.

There is no list.
No reinvention.
No deadline for becoming someone new.
There is only the steady choice
to remain present,
to trust that willingness itself
is an act of grace.

So this year begins
not with resolve, but with intention:
the intention to stay present,
the intention to try again tomorrow,
the intention to simply keep showing up.

A prayer for New Year’s Day (and perhaps every day)

To the One who goes by many names and yet is ultimately beyond all names,

grant us wisdom as we move away from what we know into the unknown of what is to come;

give us courage to struggle for justice, equality, access, opportunity, inclusion, and liberation for everyone;

help us to understand the ways in which we have fallen short, to make amends, and to live differently in humility;

renew our resolve to stand up, speak out, step back, lean in, discover, learn, and rest;

provide us the ability to know when each is necessary;

remind us that ultimately we are enough, we are loved, and we are not alone.

We pray this today and everyday.

Amen.
