I recently had the honor of creating a custom perfume with Liv to celebrate her 14th birthday. Not only as a novelty or a “make-your-own” activity—but as a thoughtful, intentional experience.

We moved slowly. We smelled. We listened—to what she was drawn to, what made her soften, what made her light up. I watched her confidence grow with each choice, each yes and no. This is one of the quiet gifts of working with scent: it teaches discernment, presence, and trust in your own responses.

Her final perfume felt unmistakably hers. Not something borrowed. Not something trendy. Something that met her exactly where she is right now—on the edge of becoming.

At the end, she held her bottle with that particular kind of pride that comes from having created something meaningful, something personal. A scent to grow with. A memory sealed in aroma.

Experiences like this remind me why I do this work—not just to make perfume, but to create moments of reflection, initiation, and self-recognition through scent.

On the Winter Solstice, fire becomes a memory.

Across ancient traditions—from Yule fires in the North to solstice flames tended by desert and mountain cultures—humans lit fire not to conquer the dark, but to sit with it. To honor the moment when the sun appears to stand still before beginning its slow return.

Fire remembers what the body knows:
that light is cyclical.
that darkness is not failure.
that rebirth rarely announces itself loudly.

Here in the Sierra, this time of year strips everything down to essentials. The land grows quiet. The mountains wait. Mornings feel hushed and deliberate. It’s a season that doesn’t reward urgency.

My way of meeting it is movement and stillness intertwined—solo bike rides through cold air and empty trails, followed by long pauses. Time to reflect on what’s ready to be released, and what wants to be carried forward with more care.

The solstice marks a return, yes—but first, a reckoning with stillness.

Tonight, a flame is enough.
A reminder that even in the longest night, the light has not been lost—only resting.

Today feels like the right moment to step out from behind the bottles and introduce the people who quietly hold up Resonance.

It’s me, Allie — and this is my family.
