Yes, hydrosols are SO gentle, therapeutic, and easy to use everyday!

Hydrosols were originally the main product of distillation—not essential oils.

In early Arabic and Persian traditions, the steam-distillation process was primarily developed to produce aromatic waters—what we now call hydrosols—which were prized for their gentle therapeutic properties and everyday use.

💧 Unlike essential oils, which were often a byproduct, hydrosols were used for medicinal preparations, cosmetic rituals, and spiritual cleansing. They were safer to use internally and topically—especially in cultures where gentleness was valued in healing.

🌿 How did they do it?
Ancient distillers used clay or copper alembic stills. Aromatic plant material was placed above boiling water, and the steam—infused with volatile compounds—was collected and cooled. As it condensed, the fragrant water (hydrosol) was separated from the tiny layer of oil (if any).

Persian polymath Avicenna (Ibn Sina) is credited with refining this method around the 10th–11th century, especially for rose water, which became a staple in medicine, cuisine, and perfumery across the Middle East and Europe.
