Last week included several collaborative meetings focused on strengthening partnerships and improving services for our community. I wanted to share some of this work that happens during the discovery phase — long before anything may or may not become an agenda item. Some of these efforts never require board action, while others may eventually come forward. Relationship building and identifying gaps are key to making those determinations.

Friday, myself, Stacy Lynch, Division Director of Health Services, Stacey Kuzak, CEO of the JCF Healthcare District, and Yosemite Superintendent Ray McPadden got together in beautiful YNP. We discussed strengthening relationships, sharing resources, filling service gaps, and improving communication to better support those we serve. A follow-up meeting is planned with the Healthcare Commander in Yosemite and additional partners. These types of collaborations help ensure the wellbeing of our constituents through shared effort and coordination.

I also met with our CAO Joe Lynch, John Patton, Mariposa County’s Wildfire Mitigation Coordinator, and the Forest Service to discuss the possibility or feasibility of a Good Neighbor Agreement between the County and the USFS. In addition, MCFAC is engaged in exploring this possibility, as our partners would play a key role in work implementation and may benefit from funding opportunities that are not typically accessible.

In other news, Marilyn Saunders and her Economic Development team are exploring the expansion of Opportunity Zones in Mariposa County. The application opens in July, and they are working to ensure areas currently not recognized may become eligible. Opportunity Zones encourage private investment in economically distressed areas through tax incentives, which can help support job creation, business growth, and community revitalization.

Following a recent webinar hosted by the Governor’s Office, I was able to share guidance with Marilyn and her team to support their efforts.

These types of conversations and partnerships matter. Thank you to everyone working hard — in both small and big ways — to support our community.

The JCF Hospital Foundation recently awarded Jody Wheeler a $1,000 scholarship as she works to complete her Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (BSN) at National University, Fresno. Pictured, Jody is standing with the Foundation's Executive Administrator, Miranda Wass.

Jody is currently a licensed vocational nurse (LVN) at John C. Fremont Healthcare District's Ewing Wing. The Ewing Wing is a top-rated, 24-bed skilled nursing facility, providing 24-hour nursing, long-term care, and rehab services in a homelike environment.

Wheeler is learning a great deal through her studies to become a BSN. This new knowledge allows her to better serve Ewing Wing residents and the community.

“I have been an LVN for 21 years,” Wheeler continued. “I want to be able to do more for our community and our residents. Earning a BSN will help me achieve this. We have the best patients here in Mariposa at the Ewing Wing, and I want to increase my skills to serve them even better.”

Congratulations, Jody! Thank you for studying to advance your skills for the betterment of Ewing Wing residents.

The JCF Hospital Foundation thanks R. Hambleton Electric and Pump for their donation of time and materials to repair the hospital's vending machine. Some buttons weren't functioning, causing selected items not to fall. Thanks to John C. Fremont Healthcare District staff for alerting the Foundation to the issue. The machine required wiring replacement, and we appreciate R. Hambleton Electric and Pump for fixing it!

The vending machine is located in the hospital cafeteria and is frequently used. It is especially vital during nights and weekends, as it often serves as the only place for night shift staff, weekend staff, and visitors to get snacks or drinks.

Supporting staff and visitors is a top priority for the Hospital Foundation. Since 2023, we have managed the vending machine program, with Foundation board member Mari Bullis volunteering her time to purchase and stock snacks and beverages, focusing on keeping prices low and stocking items requested by users.

Special thanks again to R. Hambleton Electric and Pump! As a nonprofit, the Foundation appreciates donations like this, which support our mission of strengthening the rural communities of the John C. Fremont Healthcare District to promote health.
