Back to school backpack tips!

Select a backpack with wide, padded shoulder straps and a padded back to distribute weight evenly and reduce strain.

Ensure the backpack is appropriately sized— it should not be wider or longer than the child’s torso and should rest 1–2 inches below the shoulders and above the hips.

Keep the backpack’s weight at or below 10–15% of the child’s body weight (e.g., a 60-pound child should carry no more than 6–9 pounds).

Place heavier items close to the back and center of the backpack to reduce strain on the spine.

Always use both shoulder straps to evenly distribute weight and prevent posture issues. Avoid slinging the backpack over one shoulder.

Adjust straps so the backpack fits snugly against the back, with the bottom resting in the curve of the lower back.

Use a waist or chest strap, if available, to stabilize the load and reduce shoulder pressure.
