Just over here making bone broth for my client who is having a scheduled c-section tomorrow…the collagen found in bone broth is hands down the best thing to give a new mother especially after a c-section. It’s pretty simple, your skin is made up of collagen protein so after an abdominal surgery (c-section) your tissues are in need of repair/rebuild.
Bone broth is also extremely gentle on your digestion which is especially important after birth as digestion slows down dramatically. Not to mention the pain meds that are given after birth that can make you severely constipated…..you will think yourself later for choosing gentle on the system and incredibly nourishing foods, starting with this gorgeous elixir, bone broth.

Mixing up some Sweetwater Lactation Tea for my new client…
1 part Fenugreek
2 parts Fennel Seed

simmer 1 tsp of blend in 2 quarts of fresh water OR Place 1 tsp thermos with 2 quarts of just boiling water… sip throughout the day.

This tea supports digestion, hydration, breast milk production, detoxification post birth.

I usually give the partner instructions on how to prepare it first thing in the morning so it has time to steep and is ready for the mother to sip all day long.

Homemade chicken soup…there’s a reason broth is widely served during times of rest and recovery …it replenishes nutrients and is easy on digestion.

As your postpartum doula and chef one day I will be roasting a chicken for you and your family and the next i will be simmering a bone broth from the leftovers.

THIS.IS.SO.IMPORTANT with
・・・
👆🏼In no particular order.

To me, it makes 100% sense that the triggers and/or drivers of postpartum anxiety or postpartum depression are ALWAYS multifactorial.

I get so frustrated that mothers struggling with postpartum mood disorders are rarely accessed holistically. We are complex beautiful beings.

Sure, it takes more investigations, more time, or effort, more education and often more money. But it makes far more bloody sense. And IT MATTERS.

I’ve seen mama’s struggle unnecessarily. It breaks my heart 💔 …but I understand.

As it’s all consuming, confusing, overwhelming and at times shameful 😔 ‘Baby comes first’, especially if its your very first time deep in the motherhood ocean.

But wayyy too many mamas take many months or even years to begin addressing it.

What’s amazing is that I’ve seen mamas improve over and over when the myriad of contributing factors are considered, and addressed. It’s possible 🙏🏻

It is not her fault.

It is rarely ONE factor.

It is rarely “UNLUCKY” or “a SHAME”.

When you scroll through the slides you’ll see the many, many things can can contribute. It’s rarely just one of these, but often a unique combination of anywhere from 5 or 10, or more!

You’ll also see a factor come up again and again.

Mamas, you matter 💜

If you’re not feeling well or you just sense that things could (should) be better please seek help.

👉🏻 If you’re interested in learning more about my upcoming *Mama Recover* naturopathic consults & program, drop your email in at the link in bio. This way you’ll be the first to hear!

Otherwise if you can’t wait for that please seek help from someone - or a combination - that can help you work out where you’re at, and why and where you could be 💚

Stewed Apricots spiced with ginger, cinnamon and cardamom…stewed slowly in ghee and topped with a splash of heavy cream (because why wouldn’t you top everything with heavy cream?)…the first time I tasted these I immediacy thought I was eating a Tart Tatin in a Paris Cafe (I wish!)

This is usually the first thing I make for a new mother…it is quick to throw together on the stove while I get some other dishes going and without fail everyone melts into a puddle of comfort upon first bite.

Stewed fruits have been around for a while and for good reason…we feed them to babies and the elderly because they are so easy to digest and incredibly satisfying …especially when they are ladened with ghee.

The spices work by helping to ignite your digestive fire which slows down tremendously after giving birth, and they are warming to your mind, body and soul.

MEET THE DOULA: Hello, I’m Kelly. I entered the world of postpartum care after learning of the practices of traditional cultures surrounding the postpartum period or what is known by some as The Sacred Window. During this precious time, in other cultures, the new mother is cared for by their family and community. Throughout the years as I have seen the women in my life become mothers, alongside the joy that comes with this gift I have also witnessed as they quickly become sleep deprived and live in a state of feeling constantly undernourished- always ravenous and looking for more food. In other cultures the role of the new mother is ONLY to rest, nourish herself and feed her new baby. Mothers in western cultures are often hosting guests, doing laundry, cleaning the house and taking care of older children in the days and weeks following birth….When I realized how things COULD be for new mamas I knew I wanted to be part of the change. When I learned how crucial staying away from certain types of food and how nourishing new mamas with the RIGHT foods could help in preventing digestive issues and help aide in keeping up with milk supply, amongst other benefits, I felt called to do this work. Using food as medicine; this was something I have always believed in and now I had found my audience-NEWBORN MOTHERS; a population often overlooked and told by doctors ’see you in six weeks’ as they leave the hospital.
As your postpartum doula I will be there for you during those six weeks and beyond. You were never meant to go through this time alone and now as your postpartum doula you don’t have to.
I will be there to nourish your mind, body and spirit so you are able to care for yourself and your baby and walk through this sacred window stronger than when you entered it.
I have openings starting January 2022. If you live in the area of Boston DM me for me info.

Did you know that eating dates toward the end of pregnancy may result in a shorter, easier, and uncomplicated birth? 🤔
Yes, dates! There have been several studies that show this humble fruit can improve birth outcomes 🙏🏽
Per the research, six dates per day is the magic number if you are eating the small dates.🤓
👉🏼 Deglet noor dates are about 1 inch long. 6 per day.
👉🏼 Medjool dates can be up to 2 inches long so only eating 3 daily are needed.
If you have gestational diabetes or are sensitive to natural sugar, you can eat one large date after a protein/fat rich meal and see how your body responds. Talk to your healthcare provider about your specific situation. 👍🏻
Search "mama natural dates during pregnancy” to read about the studies, get date recipes (with ways to hide the flavor!) & learn more.💜
