Thursday, June 19 is Juneteenth. This federal holiday commemorates the emancipation of the last enslaved Black people in the United States.

In honor of Juneteenth, UMass Memorial Health is pausing to recognize our Black community leaders, patients, doctors and neighbors. Today, we encourage you to listen and engage in conversation with inspiring leaders in your own community.

We are so fortunate to have Michelle provide care to our patients at UMass Memorial-Marlborough Hospital! She is a terrific member of the ICU Team. Compassionate, dedicated and highly skilled!

Meet Michelle Fortier, a Registered Nurse in our ICU at UMass Memorial-Marlborough Hospital.

"Since I was young, I’ve always known that I wanted to be in a career where I could help people. At first, I wanted to be a counselor, but I knew I did not want to be stuck in an office all day. Becoming a nurse was a great opportunity to help people and stay active in my role.

My favorite part of my job is meeting new people, whether it’s patients or other coworkers. Another part of nursing that makes me feel like I’ve made a difference is seeing someone come in so sick and progressively get better enough to be discharged.

I started at Marlborough hospital in 2021 as a medical surgical nurse. I’ve had the opportunity to precept new hires, teach student nurses, as well as perform the duties and responsibilities of charge nurse. I took a leap and applied for an ICU position within Marlborough. I have found my calling within nursing, and it has been a breath of fresh air.

Working for UMass Memorial Health has always been my dream since I was younger. I have worked for a couple of different campuses, but my home is Marlborough. Community hospitals are small with limited resources, but I feel like it has made me a stronger nurse. I love how you can start from one position and work your way up, depending on what interests you. There is always something to learn and opportunities to grab.

When I'm not working, I can often be seen at the gym, reading a book, or at home with my boyfriend and cat."

Michelle, you are so compassionate, dedicated and committed to your role. We applaud you for being an exceptional caregiver and inspiring team member!
