August is National Multiethnic Donor Awareness Month (NMDAM) – a collaborative effort to save and improve the quality of life of diverse communities by creating a positive culture of organ and tissue donation.
Why is NMDAM needed? In some minority communities who are at higher risk for health conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, kidney, and heart disease the need for donation and transplant is more pronounced. Currently, 60% of people on the national transplant waiting list are from communities of color, but minority communities are less likely to register as organ donors. This contributes to a shortage of organs available for minority patients who need transplants.
