Expected vs. Unexpected Behavior

When children communicate, their behavior often reflects their language and social skills. Understanding what’s expected for your child’s age can help support growth—and respond effectively when behavior is unexpected.

Expected Behavior:

Using gestures, words, or sounds to ask for something

Following simple directions with prompts

Engaging in short play routines with others

Unexpected Behavior:

Ignoring prompts or instructions

Tantrums or frustration when communication is hard

Avoiding interaction or play

Tips for Families:

Respond calmly and consistently

Model words or gestures for what your child wants

Celebrate attempts at communication, even if imperfect

With guidance, children can learn to replace unexpected behaviors with effective communication!

Teaching Expected vs. Unexpected Behavior

At STMK, we help children replace challenging behaviors with effective communication through play-based, individualized strategies.

Here’s how we teach it:

Modeling → we show children what expected behaviors look like—like asking for help, using words or gestures, and taking
turns.

Prompting and support → we provide cues and guidance to help children use communication instead of frustration.

Positive reinforcement → every attempt, even small, is celebrated to encourage repetition.

Practice across settings → we use everyday routines and play activities to help children generalize skills.

Our goal is to make communication fun, meaningful, and effective—so children can express themselves confidently instead of using unexpected behaviors!

Sound of the week

This week we’re focusing on the “j” sound—an exciting sound that pops up in so many everyday words your child knows and loves! Some words with “j” include jam, jelly, jump, jacket, juice, and joy.

How we practice the “j” sound:

Listening first → we help children hear and recognize the “j” sound in words

Sound placement → start with your tongue tapping the ridge like a /d/ sound and then releasing it into a quick “zh” sound while keeping your voice on

Play-based practice → games, books, and toys make practicing fun and natural

Try it at home:

Say a few “j” words during daily routines—“juice,” “jammies,” “jacket”

Emphasize the sound (“j-j-jump!”)

Make it playful with silly phrases like “jumpy jelly and juicy jam!”

Building clear speech happens one sound at a time—and this week, we’re j-j-jumping into “J” !

Remember to take the time to talk!

Understanding your child’s feelings with the Zones of Regulation

The Zones of Regulation help children identify and manage their emotions:

🟢 Green Zone → happy, focused, calm, or proud

🟡 Yellow Zone → worried, frustrated, silly, or excited

🟠 Red Zone → angry, upset, or out of control

🔵 Blue Zone → sad, bored, tired, or sick

Knowing your “zone” is the first step to self-regulation. Encourage your child to use tools like deep breaths, movement, or talking to move toward the green zone.

Sound of the week

This week we’re practicing the /d/ sound — like in dog, door, daddy, and doll! The /d/ sound is made by placing the tongue behind the top teeth, touching the ridge just above them (the alveolar ridge), and popping it down quickly while using your voice.

Try these fun ways to practice at home:

Tap + talk: tap your tongue to the roof of your mouth and say “d, d, d!” together

Name game: think of everyone’s names that start with /d/ — “Daddy,” “Dylan,” “Daisy,” etc.

Toy talk: play with dolls, dinosaurs, or dogs and say their names every time you use them

Story time: read books and locate all the /d/ words

Keep practice short, fun, and positive! Little bursts of repetition throughout the day make a big difference.

Remember to take the time to talk!

Gestures and Early Communication

Gestures are your child’s first way of communicating! Before words, little ones use gestures like pointing, waving, or signing more to share wants and ideas.

Why it matters:

Supports language development

Reduces frustration

Builds social skills

Tips for families:

Model gestures with words

Celebrate attempts

Offer choices and wait for a response

Every gesture is a step toward stronger communication!

Are they just picky eaters or is it time to seek out some help?!

Did you know it is common for kids to go through picky eating phases ??? — especially between the ages of 2–5 years. So, how do you know when it is more than just a phase?

Normal picky eating:

~ Prefers certain textures or flavors

~ Gets “stuck” on a few favorite foods

~ Needs several tries before accepting new foods

Time to seek help if your child:

**Eats fewer than 15–20 foods

**Gags or vomits with textures

**Avoids whole food groups

**Gets extremely upset at mealtime

**Has slow growth or weight concerns

**These can all be signs of a feeding difficulty, not just picky eating.

But you’re in luck — we can help! Our feeding specialists can guide your child to explore new foods in a fun, low-stress way.

Each month we pick our speech stars but for the month of November and the month of giving thanks I chose to switch it up a bit and recognize my star SLPs

🌟 A Heartfelt Thank You to My Amazing Team 🌟

Every day at Speak To Me Kids our kids work towards exceeding expectations and extraordinary things happen—because of these incredible SLPs. These women are the heart of this practice and the reason so many children walk out our doors a little more confident, a little more empowered, and a lot more celebrated.

To our all of our therapists Jamie, Amanda. Stefani, Allie, Gabby, Sara, Laura, Erin, Audrey, Melissa, Jordan and Laura - In the month of thanksgiving it has to be said and posted and shouted:

Thank you for your patience—the kind that meets each child exactly where they are.

Thank you for your creativity—turning therapy into play, challenges into victories, and progress into joy.

Thank you for your compassion—showing families that they’re not alone, that growth takes time, and that every milestone matters.

Thank you for your commitment—early mornings, late nights, thoughtful planning, endless energy, and a passion that shines in every session.

You transform frustration into breakthroughs.

You give children the tools to express their hearts.

You give families hope.

What you do is not just work—it’s impact. It’s kindness. It’s life-changing.

If your child is scheduled for their first speech and language evaluation — welcome! We know it can feel a little unknown, so here’s what to expect:

1. Getting to know you and your child → We will start by chatting with you about your child’s development, strengths, and any concerns you have. Your insight is an important part of the process.

2. Play-based assessment → Most of the evaluation feels like play! We use toys, pictures, and games to see how your child communicates, understands language, and interacts with others in a natural way.

3. Testing and observation → Depending on your child’s age and needs, we may use standardized assessments to better understand their speech sounds, language skills, and/or feeding abilities.

4. Discussion and next steps → We will review what we observed and share our initial impressions. You will have plenty of time to ask questions, and we will outline next steps or recommendations for therapy if needed.

Our goal is to make your child feel comfortable, supported, and informed every step of the way!
