Vowels

After exploring all our consonant sounds in our “Sound of the Week” series, we’re diving into vowels!

Vowels are the heart of every word, and this series will cover:

Short vowels → quick, simple vowel sounds…think of the word “cut”

Long vowels → vowels that “say their name”….think of the word “mate”

Diphthongs → two vowel sounds that glide together in one syllable….think the word “boy”

We will explore each vowel in detail with practice words and playful activities to help kids strengthen their speech skills.

Get ready for vowel fun and speech practice that is easy to do at home!

Sound of the week

This week we’re focusing on the tricky /r/ sound—one of the most common sounds kids target in speech therapy!

Did you know there is more than one type of R?!This is why we call it tricky!

💬 Initial /r/ → at the beginning of a word or in a blend (rabbit, great)

💬 Vocalic /r/ → after a vowel (bird, fork, car)

Why /r/ is so tricky:

🗯️ The tongue must be curled or bunched in the back—placement matters

🗯️ It sounds different depending on word position and the vowel that shapes it

🗯️ It is a shaped sound that takes time to master

Tips and strategies:

Auditory awareness → listen for /r/ in books or songs

Tactile cues → use a mirror to check tongue placement; tongue up and slightly back

Repetition and fun games → use word lists or tongue twisters

Incorporate play → make an /r/ scavenger hunt

Short, consistent practice (5–10 min/day) is best.

Celebrate every attempt—progress comes with practice!

Meet our January Speech Stars!!🌟

Meet Ely!

Ely has been receiving speech therapy services at Speak to Me Kids since 2022 and has been working with Ms. Amanda since 2023. Ely communicates using a customized AAC device that includes all of his favorite people and things.

Ely has been making steady and meaningful strides in using his AAC device to express himself. Whether he’s using his device to request his favorite Mr. Potato Head or confidently ending each session with, “I want to go with Mom Mom,” he continues to show just how much of a star he is!

Ely is also showing strong skills in scanning his device and accessing icons in a meaningful way. Ely is now recognizing and flying through familiar tasks, while demonstrating a wonderful willingness to try new things.

What truly stands out is his joy and connection. After each task, Ely proudly looks between Mom Mom and Ms. Amanda with a big smile on his face, sharing his excitement and pride in his hard work. We are all incredibly proud of his effort, determination, growth, and most importantly, he should be proud of himself for a job well done.

Keep up the amazing work Ely, you are a true star! ⭐

Meet Nash!

In May of 2025, Nash began his speech therapy journey at Speak to Me Kids. He and Miss Stefani formed an immediate connection bound by a love for music and understanding. When he first started with Miss Stefani, Nash was learning to navigate his AAC device to increase his initiation and communication. In the months that he has been attending speech therapy, Nash's language skills have begun to soar. With an increasingly personalized AAC device, Nash is able to formulate sentences to ask for what he wants and make comments. He specifically loves to ask "I want pirate", because anything pirate themed is his favorite at the moment! He is expanding his vocabulary to talk about all of his favorite things including songs like "Itsy Bitsy Spider" and "Ring Around the Rosie". He is even beginning to utilize his AAC device to answer "who", "what" and "where" questions. And that's not all….Nash is starting to imitate verbal approximations and is filling in "ready, set, go". He is truly a rockstar and Miss Stefani is constantly moved by his motivation and persistence. All of us here at Speak to Me Kids can't wait to see everything that Nash will accomplish!

Keep up the hard work Nash! We can’t wait to see how far you’ll go!! 🌟

Why teach this sign?

🟢 Easy to pair with transitions

🟢 Gives children control in their environment

Tip for parents: Try “GO” during natural routines—“Go outside,” “Go swing,” “Go car!”—and use both the sign and spoken word consistently.

Did you know reading to your child is one of the strongest, simplest ways to support speech and language development?

This week’s cozy read is “Snow” by Uri Shulevitz—a beautifully illustrated picture book that transforms a dull gray city into a magical winter wonderland with the first falling snow! Follow a curious boy and his dog as they discover the joy of snow piling up all around them.❄️☃️❄️☃️

Why it is great for speech and language → this book encourages vocabulary growth, descriptive language, and talking about observations, predictions, and emotions.

Try this while reading:

🗯️Predict what will happen next

🗯️Describe the snowy scenes

🗯️Talk about how the characters feel
