What is the ideal number of daily steps?
The CARDIA study followed 2,110 middle aged adults and grouped the number of daily steppers into Low 10,000 per day. After a mean follow-up of 10.8 years they noticed a strong link between step quantity and pre-mature all cause mortality.
What was the magic number of steps for this study?
At least 7,000 steps per day. If you cleared that minimum you were 50-70% less likely to die prematurely. The more steps the better-
until 10,000 steps. Past 10,000 steps the risk reduction wasn't significant and didn't play a role in mortality risk reduction.
So don't feel too guilty if you fall short of the 10,000 steps once in a while.
