Raising Awareness of Intimate Partner Violence and Pregnancy

Recognizing and addressing the connection between intimate partner violence (IPV) and pregnancy is essential to improving maternal health. IPV can have serious impacts on maternal and infant outcomes, making it crucial for health providers to understand the dynamics of IPV and know how to respond.

With support from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, Maternal Mortality Surveillance Program, the Michigan Coalition to End Domestic & Sexual Violence (MCEDSV) https://bit.ly/49vUboy has developed a new collection of resources to help health care providers and clinics integrate universal education, trauma-informed screening and referral practices into their everyday care. These materials include a resource compendium https://bit.ly/3LRdFKn, on-demand educational videos https://bit.ly/4o0Hplj, and print resources/ posters – all designed to help providers start meaningful conversations and connect patients to support.

To explore resources, tools and referral information, visit MCEDSV’s website at: www.mcedsv.org.

National Native American Heritage Month is a time to celebrate the traditions, languages and stories of Native American and Alaska Native communities and ensure their rich histories and contributions continue to thrive with each passing generation. This November and every month, we should celebrate the culture and heritage of the remarkable Native Americans who deeply enrich the quality and character of our Nation. https://www.bia.gov/NNAHM

November was designated as National American Indian Heritage Month in 1990 by President George H.W. Bush and is now commonly known as Native American Heritage Month. Governor Gretchen Whitmer also recognized Native American Heritage Month November 2025. https://bit.ly/3XDHz7o

The 2025 U.P. Hospitals Rural Health Showcase brought together medical students, residents, hospital leaders, and community partners from across Michigan’s Upper Peninsula — all united by a shared goal: strengthening the future of rural health care.

Hosted in collaboration with the Marquette Family Medicine Residency Program, the MSU College of Human Medicine UP Region Campus, and Upper Peninsula Health Care Solutions (UPHCS), the event featured meaningful discussions on recruitment and retention, engaging poster sessions, and a vibrant resource fair highlighting regional opportunities.

UPHCS extends sincere appreciation to Dr. Meredith Buck, Dr. Stuart Johnson, Dr. Kelley Mahar, Dr. Erick Petrushek, Katrina Keough (UPHCS), and Erica Darner (UPHS – Marquette) for their leadership and contributions to this year’s program.

A special thank-you to Dr. Paula Rechner, whose keynote address underscored the importance of collaboration and innovation in sustaining rural health care across the U.P.

And a heartfelt thank-you to the hospitals across the Upper Peninsula who attended, shared their expertise, and supported this year’s Showcase — your commitment to mentoring and investing in the next generation of clinicians continues to strengthen rural health across our region.

Advancing Maternal Health Through Regional Collaboration

Upper Peninsula Health Care Solutions (UPHCS) was proud to join leaders from the seven birthing hospitals across Michigan’s Upper Peninsula for the Alliance for Innovation on Maternal Health (AIM) Hypertension Safety Bundle training, hosted by the Michigan Health & Hospital Association Keystone Center.

As the hospital network, fiduciary, and lead organization for the Region 1 Perinatal Quality Collaborative, UPHCS supports hospitals and care teams across the U.P. in implementing evidence-based practices to improve outcomes for mothers and infants.

Through collaboration, shared learning, and data-driven quality improvement, our region continues to make meaningful progress in maternal safety.

We appreciate the Keystone Center and MHA for their partnership and leadership in advancing this critical work statewide and our partner, Michigan Department of Health and Human Services the backbone of Michigan's Perinatal Quality Collaboratives.
