On May 5th, UPHCS hosted our 4th Spinning Babies® training in the Upper Peninsula! 28 attendees learned physiological techniques that offer a complete system of birth preparation and labor ease concepts to improve labor with the baby's position.

Thank you to our wonderful trainer, Tammy Ryan. It was a day of community, learning, and meaningful connection.

This training was made possible through funding from the Region 1 PQC and UP Health Care Solutions, allowing us to offer it to attendees at a reduced rate.

We are so grateful for all the birth workers and medical staff that came together to make birth better for all families throughout the UP.

In 2023, 41% of Michigan households- approximately 1.67 million- fell below the ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) threshold, meaning they cannot afford basic necessities like housing and utilities. These aren't just statistics; ALICE households include the childcare providers, food service workers, cashiers, delivery drivers, and personal care aides who keep our economy running every day.

For families facing these pressures, navigating available programs and resources can be overwhelming- and that's why events like our 8th Annual Marquette County Community Resource Fair exist. Join us on Friday, June 12th at the Lakeview Arena from 2:00-5:00pm to connect face-to-face with organizations offering housing and utility assistance, including:
• Action Alger Marquette
• United
• .O.M.E of Mackinac County

• Michigan Department of Health and Human Services
• Room at the Inn
• The Salvation Army Marquette County, MI
• Superior Watershed Partnership
• UPCAP Services
• UPPCO

We hope to see you there! For more data from United for ALICE: https://www.unitedforalice.org/home

When we understand mental health challenges can be at the root of addiction, we start asking 'how can we help?’ with no judgement. That question alone can make a big difference.
Awareness Leads to Compassion.
• Mental illnesses are medical conditions involving changes in emotion, thinking, or behavior that can affect daily functioning.
• Serious mental illness can substantially interfere with major life activities, including work, school, relationships, and self-care.
• Economic instability, housing insecurity, unemployment, and limited access to healthcare can increase stress and worsen mental health conditions.
• Chronic stress related to financial hardship or unstable housing can contribute to the development or worsening of serious mental illness.

Young people thrive when support comes early. Encouraging open conversations about mental health can help children and teens feel supported in reaching out.
Early Support Matters: Recognizing Signs in Children and Youth
• Parents and caregivers are often the first to notice changes. Paying attention to patterns, having open conversations, and connecting children and teens to support early can make a meaningful difference.
• Changes in mood, sleep, appetite, thinking, or behavior may signal the need for support.
• Most serious mental illnesses begin in young adulthood.
• Exposure to trauma can affect long-term mental health.
• Timely assessment and access to services improve outcomes.
• Community awareness strengthens early identification and support.
• Young people thrive when support comes early. Asking for help on behalf of a child, teen, or young adult is an act of protection and advocacy.

The latest data showed that food insecurity among children in our region has increased by 52.5%. Approximately 1 in 7 people living in the Upper Peninsula face food insecurity, affecting roughly 40,000 residents. For individuals struggling to afford housing, utilities, transportation, and other necessities, the additional burden of high food prices can have a significant impact on household budgets. Connecting people to the resources they need is at the heart of our mission at UPHCS, and our 8th Annual Marquette County Community Resource Fair is one of the ways we put that mission into action.

On Friday, June 12th at Lakeview Arena, join us from 2:00-5:00 PM for a free community meal generously sponsored by The Salvation Army Marquette County, MI. Stop by and speak with these participating partners working to address food insecurity in our community:
• Community Action Alger Marquette
• Feeding America West Michigan
• Ishpeming Multi-Purpose Senior Center
• Michigan Department of Health and Human Services(MDHHS)
• Marquette Food Co-op
• Marquette Senior Center
• Negaunee Senior Citizens Center
• The Salvation Army Marquette County, MI
• United Way of Marquette County
• UPCAP Services
• Upper Peninsula Health Plan Community Health Workers
• Forsyth Senior Center

Stay tuned for more updates on the many local organizations we will be hosting at the resource fair. We hope to see you there, and don't forget to check the comments for more food resources and information from our partners at Feeding America West Michigan.

More than 1 in 4 adults with serious mental health conditions also experiences a substance use issue. These two are often part of the same story.
Mental health touches every part of life - from housing and work to relationships and community. When mental health challenges arise, they often intersect with substance use, and whole person care that addresses both is essential to lasting recovery and well-being.
