Alumni Spotlight: Chloe Wilkinson!🦷🪥

“Hi pre-dents! I’m Chloe, a current D2 at the University of Michigan 😊Dental school has been an exciting, fulfilling, and challenging journey. The biggest adjustment was balancing coursework, clinical requirements, and sim lab while still making time for myself and social activities. The amazing people I’ve met have made this transition much easier. In May, I start D3 year, where I’ll treat my own patients—both nerve-wracking and exciting!

My biggest advice to you is to get involved, keep an open mind, and enjoy the journey. Don’t stress too much about following a traditional path! I originally planned for medical school but shifted gears after the pandemic. After graduating from NMU in 2020, I pursued a Master’s at the University of Michigan School of Public Health where I did dental public health research in Thailand. This experience along with shadowing and speaking with dentists confirmed that dentistry was the right path for me 🦷

NMU gave me a strong foundation in the sciences, incredible faculty support, and great experiences—one of my favorites was co-founding Mind Your Health, NMU’s first mental health awareness campaign. If you have any questions about dental school, applications, or the DAT, feel free to reach out!”

Alumni Spotlight: Lauren Clausen!🦷 🪥

“Hi pre-dents! My name is Lauren Clausen and I recently graduated from Marquette University School of Dentistry.💙💛

My time at Marquette flew by, but I of course learned a ton and met some new lifelong best friends...some of which are going to be in my wedding which is so fun! Dental school is tough, so it is important to have fun outside of school to keep you motivated. Exploring Milwaukee was exciting- there was always something happening, whether it was attending Summerfest, trying out a new restaurant with friends, or enjoying a boat cruise along the rivers that wind through the city. 🌇

The Pre-Dental Club at NMU supported me in several meaningful ways throughout my journey to and during dental school. It provided early exposure to the profession and its specialties through guest speakers, connected me with pre-dents who were navigating the same process, and emphasized the value of building relationships and expanding my horizons- among so many other things.😺

One of the most meaningful experiences at Marquette was reconnecting with Anja Erickson, a pre-dental friend from NMU who’s two years behind me. While we knew each other there, we grew closer in dental school. Sharing the same background made our bond special, and I was happy to offer advice and support, especially during our little coffee shop chats.☕️

Now that I’m done with dental school, my plan is to head to Eau Claire, Wisconsin for a rural health fellowship in general dentistry. This opportunity will allow me to expand my skills by working alongside various dental specialists, with a strong focus on oral surgery and pediatrics. 💉

It’s impossible to sum up four years of school, but it was definitely a wild ride. Time flies, so even though it’s tough, make sure to find moments to enjoy it and appreciate the little things- they’ll take you farther than you think! 🦷”

Pre-dental students Elena, Liam, and Noah visited Belize with a group of nursing and pre-health students!

On their study abroad trip, they applied fluoride to students’ teeth at a Mayan school, taught students about oral health, set up mobile clinics in rural communities, and visited a local hospital and dental clinic in San Ignacio! In addition to healthcare related activities, students immersed themselves into Belizean culture. They visited Mayan ruins, waterfalls, medicinal plant gardens, local cafes, markets, and got in a bit of snorkeling! This trip was an enriching educational and personal experience that we would recommend to anyone interested in healthcare!🦷 🩺🏥
