Accessible thing of the month: Spring-time entertainment outside!

Spring is quickly approaching.

SAIL would like to share some important tips for creating an outdoor dining or entertainment space that is accessible to all.

Here are a few key considerations to keep in mind.

Parking Spaces: Keep accessible parking spaces clear of obstructions like outdoor canopy tents, food vendor stations, sandwich signs, or portable restrooms.

Accessible routes: Routes to and through outdoor spaces should be clear, firm, stable, and slip-resistant and should be 36’’ wide. Tables, chairs, or sandwich board signs shouldn’t obstruct the accessible route. If a customer’s mobility device obstructs the accessible route, always ask the owner’s permission before moving a mobility device to an area that is safely out of the way of other patrons and servers.

Lawncare: If a garden hose is available nearby, make sure it is not placed along the accessible path that people use to travel. Additionally, ensure that the hose does not spray water onto this path where customers might travel.

Accessible seating: Ensure accessible seating is provided along the accessible route. Outdoor table surfaces should be no higher than 34 inches above the floor and clear space underneath at least 27 inches high (for wheelchair users to get their feet and knees under the table). If the table provides a sunshade, no more than 5 pounds of force, and no tight grasping, pinching, or twisting of the wrist should be required.

Event promotion: Know before you go. If you host events in the outdoor seating area of your business, provide customers with important accessibility information on the event flyers or social media posts for events. This will help ensure that all attendees can enjoy the event comfortably and easily.
Consider including the following accessibility information about your event.
1) Location of accessible parking.
2) Closest accessible entrance to the event area.
3) Accessible seating options.
4) Nearest accessible restrooms.

Service Animals: Under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), a service animal is defined as a dog individually trained to perform tasks or do work for an individual with a disability, and businesses and public entities must allow these service animals in areas where the public is allowed. For some guidance about what is and isn’t permitted in the restaurant setting, check out the fact sheet at the link below provided by the Michigan Department of Civil Rights.

Accessible thing of the month: Paralympics!

The 2026 Paralympic Games kick off tomorrow.

Competition begins 3/6/2026 at 2 p.m. ET on NBC and Peacock.

A total of 72 athletes and guides will compete for Team USA this year.

The Games will feature six para sports: alpine skiing, biathlon, cross-country skiing, ice hockey, snowboarding, and wheelchair curling.

Three Michigan natives will be competing:

Reid Goble– Para Nordic skiing (guide for Jake Adicoff). A former skier at Michigan Technological University, Goble brings collegiate experience to the Para Nordic team.

Mike Schultz – Para snowboarding. A veteran athlete known for pioneering advancements in adaptive equipment.

Daniel Cnossen – Para Nordic skiing. While often associated with his military service, Cnossen has strong ties to the Midwest and is considered a top contender.

Good luck to all the athletes competing!
