Doulas of Marquette

Doulas of Marquette Pregnancy, birth, postpartum, and infant feeding support and education for all local UP families. We believe that birth matters because YOU matter.

Since 2010, Doulas of Marquette has offered birth doula, postpartum doula, childbirth education, and breastfeeding support to Marquette County and Upper Peninsula families. Our mission is to support growing families in feeling informed, empowered, and nurtured by facilitating connection to themselves and each other throughout the process of pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. We are here to support you throughout your pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. We amplify your desires, help educate you every step of the way, and center you and your partner throughout your entire experience. We limit the clients we take each month, so we can fully show up for you. We would love the opportunity to get to know you and see how we can best support you! We were able to attend this wonderful event along with taking a tour of the Beacon House Marquette! The space, services, and staff are beyond words. So thankful to have this beautiful and healing place for families in our community to land when they need support the most. 🤍

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who attended the Expectant Mother & Infant Health Conference!💛 Your support and participation made the day truly meaningful, and we are so grateful to have shared this important conversation with such a caring community.

A very special thank you goes out to our amazing presenters from UPHS, UPHCS, and NMU Center for Rural Health - Linda Marshall, RN, IBCLC; Dr. Jenna Racine, MFM, MD; Kelly Kurin, NNP; Katrina Keough, MPA, R.T. (R.); and Elise Burr, Director of NMU Center for Rural Health. Each of you brought valuable insight, knowledge, and compassion, helping us shine a light on the importance of maternal and infant health.👶✨

Together, through events like this, we continue building stronger, healthier beginnings for mothers, babies, and families in the U.P. community. ❤️🏡

We absolutely love this visual by The Breastfeeding Dietitian 🙌

Most babies feed like the blueberries. Some big feeds and some small feeds. Some feeds close together and others spaced further apart. And then there's 'cluster feeding' – where your baby feeds very frequently (or almost continuously!) over a period of a few hours.

A rigid breastfeeding schedule can compromise a healthy milk supply. By offering the b**b whenever your baby 'asks' for it, you'll be stimulating your breasts to make more milk because breast milk production works on a ‘supply and demand’ basis – the more milk you remove, the more your body is signalled to make.

So watch your baby, not the clock and feed according to your baby's hunger cues. This way you'll support a healthy milk supply that's attuned to your baby’s needs.

The first hour after birth—often called the Golden Hour—can have a lasting impact on breastfeeding success and newborn well-being.

There are so many benefits to baby being placed skin-to-skin right after birth and given time to adjust naturally. Here's just a few:

Breastfeeding benefits:
• Baby’s natural ability to find the breast and self-latch
• Higher likelihood of exclusive breastfeeding
• Better latch and milk transfer
• Earlier milk production and stronger long-term milk supply
• Reduced need for supplementation

Even if you don't plan to breastfeed, there are general benefits:
• Regulates baby’s temperature, heart rate, and breathing
• Calms both parent and baby
• Promotes bonding through oxytocin release
• Lowers stress levels for both

As doulas and Certified Lactation Counselors, we offer hands-off, evidence-based support that centers the parent's instincts. Research shows that minimal verbal cueing and space for self-discovery during the Golden Hour can empower new parents and support the baby's natural reflexes to breastfeed.

If immediate skin-to-skin isn’t possible, there are still many ways to support early connection and breastfeeding in the hours and days that follow. Every journey is different—and you deserve support that respects yours.

IIsn’t it amazing? Colostrum (the first milk) tailors its composition to each newborn's unique needs. This 2025 exploratory cross-sectional study found that the level of protein, carbs & fat in colostrum vary depending on whether a baby is born small for gestational age (SGA), appropriate for gestational age, or large for gestational age (LGA).
