The ”rule” of universality. We so often believe that others (read everyone) will judge us (or our behavior) negatively. For example, we are afraid to speak up or afraid to say no or to not drink like “everyone else”, or whatever. This fear of being judged can create enormous paralysis. What if I told you that you can use the “rule” of universality to calm these fears? What is this “rule”? It is the fact that no matter what you do: a 1/3 of the people will approve, a 1/3 of the people will disapprove and a 1/3 of the people JUST DON’T CARE (they are too wrapped up in their own lives to notice what you do). Try it out? Think of something you did and really examine the responses you got? This “rule” can be freeing.

How to stop self-doubt in its tracks requires a shift in mindset. Instead of starting with a focus on the aspects of yourself that are wrong or a thought of “what’s wrong with me”, focus on thoughts of “what’s right about me”. Focus on wins or prior accomplishments that are positive. When remembering those things you’ve done well or you been able to overcome in the past, you can feel more self-confident in your current circumstances and this can help you keep going.

They urge couples of be mindful of this small but powerful moment and begin conversations, particularly difficult ones gently….the longevity of your relationship may depend on it.
