The short answer: No, this Covid-19 thing is too weird, and I don't like it.
To my waiting clients:
Let me explain why I am not opening my massage practice, which specializes in helping seniors
In my forty-plus years of providing massage therapy, I have never had to worry about making others sick, since I reschedule every client if I have a symptom. I learned "universal precautions" for cleanliness when it was first developed to deal with HIV-aids, and I keep up those standards in my massage practice. My clients are caring people who reschedule if they feel sick, so that others are kept safe.
But this time, we can pass Covid-19 around when we feel healthy, when we recently tested negative, and when we are taking every known precaution. I don't know how to protect you in your own home, if I bring a hidden virus with me. I don't know how to protect my family and myself if you are unknowingly a carrier.
I grew up before most vaccinations. Polio vaccines didn't happen until I was in grade school. I caught most of the childhood diseases although my son was protected from most of them. I totally get how "isolating and waiting" can slow an epidemic -- that's the only protection we had as children. Those diseases were centuries old, but the school kids didn't have "herd immunity." If we were exposed, we caught it.
My clients are almost all high-risk. So am I, and so are most of the people I meet in "normal life." I don't know how to get back to "normal" without risking the health of the people I care about. So, no "new normal" for me, or for my massage clients. I can't open until I have some idea about how to "Do no harm."
I am not afraid, I am careful. I expect answers to come. Until then, please take care of yourselves.
See you on the other side!
