Work better with a to-do list? In honor of American Diabetes Month, we’ve got just the thing!

1. Check your blood sugar: Test often, and track results.
2. Take your medications: Even when you feel fine, medications work best when taken consistently.
3. Examine your feet daily: We know, it sounds weird. But seriously, look for cuts, bruises, red areas, or swelling.
4. Brush and floss: Diabetes increases your risk of gum disease, so dental care is crucial.
5. Check your vision: Early vision sensitivity detection prevents long-term loss.
6. Manage stress: Find healthy outlets like exercise, meditation, or talking with friends and family.
7. Ask about aspirin: Talk to your provider about whether daily aspirin can help prevent heart attack.

These daily habits might seem small, but they add up to big protection against diabetes complications. This American Diabetes Month, BMRHC encourages you to build a routine that keeps you healthy for years to come.

Maintaining a healthy weight is one of the most powerful steps you can take for better health.

Losing just 5–10% of your body weight can improve blood sugar control, reduce medication needs, lower blood pressure and cholesterol, and decrease heart disease and stroke risk.

Start by managing portions, drinking more water, adding healthy foods, staying active, and being patient with the process.

Weight loss is a journey, not a single step. During American Diabetes Month, BMRHC encourages you to talk with your provider about realistic weight goals and a plan that fits your life.

Get that blood pumping!

Physical activity helps lower blood sugar, improves insulin sensitivity, supports weight management, reduces stress, and protects your heart. Here's what to aim for:

Moderate activity - 30 minutes a day, five days a week. Think brisk walking, swimming, or cycling.

Vigorous activity - 1 hour and 15 minutes per week of activities like jogging or aerobics.

Strength training - 2 days per week. Try yoga, lifting weights, or resistance bands.

The key is finding activities you enjoy so you'll stick with them. Start small and build up gradually.

Before starting a new exercise routine, talk to your BMRHC provider to make sure it's safe and appropriate for you.

We get it. No one wants to hear how they should be changing their diet! But here's the truth: eating for diabetes doesn't mean your food has to be bland or boring.

Here are some simple tips to refine your diet:
Trim fat from meat and skin from chicken.
Use vegetable oil instead of lard or butter.
Bake, broil, boil, or grill your food. Don’t fry!
Add more fiber like whole grains, vegetables, fruits, and beans.
Swap sugary drinks for water or sugar-free beverages.
Boost flavor naturally with herbs, spices, and lemon juice.

A healthier diet plays a major role in managing diabetes and preventing complications.
