World Health Day

World Health Day is a reminder that health is important for every member of the family — including our pets. Just like people, pets benefit from regular healthcare, preventative medicine, proper nutrition, and an active lifestyle.

Routine veterinary visits help detect potential health concerns early and ensure your pet stays on track for a long, healthy life.

Ways you can support your pet’s health:
✔ Schedule regular wellness exams
✔ Stay up to date on vaccines and parasite prevention
✔ Feed a balanced, veterinarian-recommended diet
✔ Provide daily exercise and mental enrichment

At Wildwood Animal Hospital & Clinic, we are proud to partner with pet owners to help pets live healthier, happier lives every day.

April is a busy month in the veterinary world — with important reminders like Heartworm Prevention Month and Lyme Disease Prevention Month. While parasite prevention is critical, we also want to take a moment to highlight another important topic: Pet First Aid Awareness.

Accidents and unexpected emergencies can happen at any time, and knowing basic pet first aid can make a critical difference in protecting your pet’s health and safety.

Pet first aid is not a substitute for veterinary care, but it can help stabilize your pet and prevent a situation from worsening until professional medical care is available.

Some common signs that your pet may need immediate attention include:
• Difficulty breathing
• Severe bleeding or trauma
• Seizures
• Persistent vomiting or diarrhea
• Possible toxin exposure

Being prepared can make all the difference. A basic pet first aid kit may include:
✔ Gauze and bandages
✔ Antiseptic wipes or solution
✔ Digital thermometer
✔ Tweezers for splinters or ticks
✔ Your veterinarian’s contact information

If your pet is ever injured or experiencing a medical emergency, it’s important to contact your veterinarian or an emergency clinic right away.

At Wildwood Animal Hospital & Clinic, we believe informed pet owners play a key role in keeping pets safe and healthy. Taking time to learn basic pet first aid can help ensure you’re ready if an emergency ever happens. 🐶🐱

April is Heartworm Awareness Month

Heartworm disease is a serious — and potentially life-threatening — condition that affects both dogs and cats. It is transmitted through the bite of an infected mosquito, which means any pet that spends time outdoors (and even indoor pets) can be at risk.

Heartworms live in the heart, lungs, and blood vessels, where they can cause lasting damage to the cardiovascular system and lungs. In dogs, symptoms may include:
• Persistent coughing
• Fatigue or decreased activity
• Difficulty breathing
• Weight loss

Unfortunately, by the time symptoms appear, the disease may already be advanced.

The good news is that heartworm disease is almost entirely preventable. The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) recommends:
✔ Year-round heartworm prevention
✔ Annual heartworm testing for dogs
✔ Routine wellness exams to ensure prevention is working properly

Prevention is simple, safe, and far easier on your pet than treatment.

If you have questions about heartworm prevention or testing, our team at Wildwood Animal Hospital & Clinic is always happy to help keep your pets protected and healthy year-round.

🐾 April is Lyme Disease Prevention Month

As the weather warms up, ticks become more active — which means an increased risk of Lyme disease for both pets and people.

Lyme disease is transmitted through the bite of infected ticks and can cause serious health problems in dogs if left untreated. Symptoms may include:
• Fever
• Lethargy
• Joint pain or limping
• Loss of appetite
• Swollen lymph nodes

The good news is that Lyme disease is largely preventable with the right protection and routine veterinary care.

At Wildwood Animal Hospital & Clinic, we recommend:
✔ Year-round tick prevention
✔ Routine tick checks after outdoor activities
✔ Annual wellness exams and screening when recommended

Early prevention is the best way to keep your pet safe while they enjoy the outdoors. If you have questions about tick prevention or Lyme disease testing, our team is here to help!

Stay safe and enjoy the outdoors this spring!

🐾 Is your pet due for a check-up?

Keeping your pet healthy starts with regular wellness visits—and staying up to date on vaccines is one of the easiest ways to protect them from serious (and preventable) diseases.

Wellness exams are more than just a quick check—they help us catch potential health concerns early and keep your pet on track for a long, happy life 💙

During a wellness visit, we:
✔ Perform a full physical exam
✔ Update vaccines to protect against preventable diseases
✔ Monitor overall health & catch concerns early
✔ Discuss nutrition, behavior, and lifestyle
✔ Recommend preventive care tailored to your pet

Vaccines don’t just protect your pet—they help protect other animals in our community, too

💰 Got your tax return? Consider using it to get your pet up to date on vaccines and preventive care—it’s one of the best investments you can make in their health!

🍀 Happy St. Patrick’s Day from all of us at Wildwood Animal Hospital & Clinic! 🍀

While you’re celebrating with lucky charms and festive fun, don’t forget about your four-legged leprechauns!

Here are a few quick pet safety reminders:

🌈 Skip the sweets & beer – Chocolate, candy (especially xylitol), and alcohol can be toxic to pets.
☘️ Watch the decorations – Shamrocks and festive décor can be tempting to nibble but may cause tummy upset.
💚 Secure your trash – Party leftovers can lead to pancreatitis or GI upset.
🎩 Dress-up safely – If your pet rocks green gear, make sure it’s comfy and doesn’t restrict movement or breathing.

Let’s keep the luck going all year long by keeping pets safe and healthy! If your pet gets into something they shouldn’t, give us a call right away.

May your day be filled with wagging tails, gentle purrs, and a little extra luck of the Irish!

Today we proudly recognize K9 Veterans Day, a day dedicated to honoring the brave military working dogs who have served alongside our U.S. service members.

Since 1942, military working dogs have played critical roles in detection, patrol, search and rescue, and protection. These loyal heroes have served in conflicts around the world — often placing themselves in danger to protect their handlers and fellow troops.

Breeds like German Shepherds, Belgian Malinois, and Labrador Retrievers are commonly chosen for their intelligence, courage, and unwavering loyalty. But it’s their bond with their handlers that truly makes them extraordinary. 💚

At Wildwood Animal Hospital & Clinic, we are honored to care for pets of all backgrounds — and today we extend our deepest gratitude to the K9 veterans who have served our country.

If you know a veteran (two-legged or four-legged!), take a moment today to thank them for their service.
