🌞 Did you know? Even though breast milk is the gold standard for infant nutrition, it doesn’t naturally provide enough vitamin D on its own.
👶 That’s why exclusively breastfed babies need 400 IU of vitamin D daily, starting shortly after birth, to support healthy bone development and help prevent rickets.
💡 Two ways to supplement:
1️⃣ Direct infant supplementation – Use infant vitamin D drops (400 IU), given once daily.
2️⃣ Maternal supplementation – If mom takes 6,400 IU of vitamin D daily, enough can pass through breast milk to meet baby’s needs. This can be a great option for families who prefer not to use infant drops.
✨ Always consult with your healthcare provider before making changes to your supplement routine.
As a lactation consultant, my goal is to help you make informed, confident choices for your family. Whether you choose infant drops or maternal supplementation, both are safe and effective ways to support your baby’s health.
