Back-to-School Safety in Action! 🎒🚌

Last week, nearly 300 Berkeley County school bus drivers kicked off the new school year with Stop the Bleed training. With help from WVU Hospitals East, the Berkeley County Health Department, Emergency Management, and School Resource Officers, drivers got hands-on practice in lifesaving skills like applying pressure, packing a wound, and using a tourniquet.

To top it off, each driver received their very own Bleeding Control Kit to keep on their bus—another layer of safety as students head back to school. 🚍❤️

Here’s to a safe and healthy start to the school year!

🎡 Thank you to everyone who stopped by the WVU Medicine booth at the Jefferson County Youth Fair last week! Our teams had a wonderful time meeting families, answering questions, and sharing resources to support healthier living in our community.

Throughout the week, our staff led hands-on activities and screenings, including:

✅ Sun safety crafts with the Cancer Center
✅ Health education Jenga and blood pressure checks with Family Medicine & Pediatrics
✅ Senior Time screenings and heart health education
✅ “Toss Out To***co” co****le with Mother-Baby, Labor & Delivery, NICU, and Pediatrics
✅ Heart health and annual wellness information with Primary Care

We are especially grateful to Nicole Dollison, President and CEO of Jefferson Medical Center, for joining us during the fair to connect with our community.

Events like these remind us that health care is about more than appointments—it’s about building relationships and helping families feel supported close to home. 💙

We look forward to seeing you again at next year’s fair!

🚨 Better Care, Shorter Waits, Happier Patients! 🚨

We’re thrilled to open our Emergency Department Observation Unit at WVU Medicine Berkeley Medical Center.

This space is designed for patients who need extra monitoring or testing but don’t need a full hospital stay. Now, patients have private rooms, bathrooms, meals, and rest—all while freeing ED beds for urgent cases.

“Our goal is simple,” said Mark O’Hern, CEO: “Deliver the right care, at the right time, in the right place.”

💙 Innovation in action, right here in the Eastern Panhandle!

👋 Please join us in welcoming David R. Weber, MD to our infectious disease team!

Dr. Weber brings more than 35 years of experience in infectious disease and internal medicine, with an extensive background in both patient care and medical education. A Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh, Dr. Weber has trained generations of medical residents and led hospital-based infectious disease education for decades.

Board certified in both Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases, he has served in academic and private practice roles across Pennsylvania and Michigan and has been active in national medical societies since the late 1980s.

We’re honored to have Dr. Weber's depth of knowledge and leadership as part of our care team and look forward to the impact he’ll make for our patients and community.

Help us give him a warm welcome! 👏🩺

🚐💙 From School Bus to Shuttle Bus — Full Circle Moments at BMC! 💙🚐

To make sure our patients have plenty of parking, WVU Berkeley Medical Center recently launched off-site staff parking with a shuttle service — and it’s been more than just a ride… it’s become a rolling reunion! 🚌✨

Meet Karen, one of our amazing shuttle drivers and a former school bus driver. She’s been reconnecting with staff in the most unexpected way — including Ciara Boggs, a HealthNet ICU nurse who used to ride Karen’s school bus until she graduated in 2007! 🎓💛

Now, they’re back together — only this time, Karen’s driving her to save lives instead of algebra class. 🩺📚

We’re loving the drive down memory lane and the new friendships forming on board. Just another reason we say: at WVU Medicine, the journey is just as meaningful as the destination. 💫

👋 Please help us welcome Melissa Patel, DO, to the WVU Medicine team!

Dr. Patel recently completed her neurology residency at Ruby Memorial Hospital, where she trained in a comprehensive stroke center and gained broad experience in inpatient and outpatient care. During her time there, she developed clinical interests in EEG interpretation, movement disorders, and the use of Botox for migraines, spasticity, and cervical dystonia.

She earned her Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine and holds dual bachelor’s degrees in biology and psychology from the University of Maryland, along with a master’s in physiology from Georgetown University.

With a strong background in research, leadership, and community service, Dr. Patel brings both skill and heart to her work. We’re excited to welcome her to our team and to the community. 💙
