🚐💙 From School Bus to Shuttle Bus — Full Circle Moments at BMC! 💙🚐

To make sure our patients have plenty of parking, WVU Berkeley Medical Center recently launched off-site staff parking with a shuttle service — and it’s been more than just a ride… it’s become a rolling reunion! 🚌✨

Meet Karen, one of our amazing shuttle drivers and a former school bus driver. She’s been reconnecting with staff in the most unexpected way — including Ciara Boggs, a HealthNet ICU nurse who used to ride Karen’s school bus until she graduated in 2007! 🎓💛

Now, they’re back together — only this time, Karen’s driving her to save lives instead of algebra class. 🩺📚

We’re loving the drive down memory lane and the new friendships forming on board. Just another reason we say: at WVU Medicine, the journey is just as meaningful as the destination. 💫

👋 Please help us welcome Melissa Patel, DO, to the WVU Medicine team!

Dr. Patel recently completed her neurology residency at Ruby Memorial Hospital, where she trained in a comprehensive stroke center and gained broad experience in inpatient and outpatient care. During her time there, she developed clinical interests in EEG interpretation, movement disorders, and the use of Botox for migraines, spasticity, and cervical dystonia.

She earned her Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine and holds dual bachelor’s degrees in biology and psychology from the University of Maryland, along with a master’s in physiology from Georgetown University.

With a strong background in research, leadership, and community service, Dr. Patel brings both skill and heart to her work. We’re excited to welcome her to our team and to the community. 💙

Day in the Life with Josh Dunham, OR Nurse

Each month, WVU Hospitals East President and CEO Mark O’Hern spends a day shadowing one of our team members to better understand their role and how leadership can continue to support frontline staff.

Earlier this year, Mark spent the day in the Operating Room at Berkeley Medical Center with Josh Dunham, an experienced OR nurse whose career has spanned roles in EMS, critical care, and flight nursing. For the past 14 years, Josh has been a key part of our surgical services team.

“I was incredibly impressed by Josh’s attention to detail, calm presence, and the way he anticipated the needs of the team throughout a complex robotic surgery,” Mark said. “It was a powerful reminder of the level of excellence our surgical teams bring to every patient, every day.”

👏 Thank you to Josh and the entire OR team for your expertise, teamwork, and dedication to patient care.

🌟 Celebrating Excellence in Patient Care 🌟

Please join us in congratulating Barrie Riese, a nurse in the NICU at Berkeley Medical Center, and a recent recipient of the Clinical Quality Service Award!

Barrie was nominated by a grateful family who described her as a steady, compassionate presence during a stressful and emotional time. As first-time parents with a newborn in the NICU, they shared how Barrie went above and beyond to keep them informed, calm, and supported at every visit.

From her gentle, reassuring touch with the babies to her commitment to infection prevention and patient privacy, Barrie brings professionalism and heart to every shift. One nominator said it best: “The way she talked to the babies and just her touch calmed them so much.”

Her dedication reflects the very best of our nursing team. Thank you, Barrie, for the warmth, knowledge, and kindness you bring to our tiniest patients and their families.

☕ Coffee, Conversation, and Leadership That Listens ☕

At WVU Medicine Berkeley and Jefferson Medical Centers, leadership is more than a position—it’s a practice rooted in listening, learning, and taking meaningful action.

Each month, Mark O’Hern, president and CEO of Berkeley Medical Center, and Nicole Dollison, president and COO of Jefferson Medical Center, host opportunities for small-group conversations with team members. These informal gatherings offer staff a chance to speak openly with leadership about what’s working, what needs attention, and what truly matters on the front lines of care.

The most recent session took place in June at Berkeley Medical Center, where Mark connected with another thoughtful group of employees. Conversations like these help inform leadership decisions and reinforce a culture where every voice is valued.

This is part of what sets WVU Medicine apart:
✅ Leaders who show up and listen
✅ A workplace built on trust and transparency
✅ Real opportunities to shape the future of care

Looking for more than just a job? Join a team that listens—and leads—with purpose.

👏 Congratulations to Jack Shields! 👏

Please join us in celebrating Jack Shields, the 2nd Quarter 2025 Quality Service Award winner at Jefferson Medical Center!

Jack, a valued team member on our Med/Surg Unit, was recognized for his calm, decisive action during a critical patient event. When a confused patient showed signs of distress, Jack quickly responded—getting the patient safely into bed, notifying the care team, and taking vitals without hesitation. As the situation escalated, he coordinated with SCU to secure a tele box, contacted the monitor room, and helped transport the patient for a stat CT scan—all while supporting a short-staffed team during a busy night.

His skill, communication, and steady presence ensured that the patient received timely, high-quality care. This is exactly the kind of dedication that makes a difference in urgent moments—and we’re proud to recognize Jack for it.

Thank you, Jack, for your outstanding service! 🏆
