Navigating School Stress

🌱 From the desk of the Program Director: Stress is real, but so is support. Let’s build resilience from the inside out.

School can be a positive and enriching environment, but it can also create stress for students due to academic expectations, social pressures, and extracurricular demands.

Families can help students manage school stress by:

• Encouraging open conversations about school experiences
• Creating structured homework and study routines
• Promoting healthy sleep habits
• Celebrating effort, not just academic outcomes
• Seeking additional support when needed

Programs like Therapeutic Day Treatment (TDT) help students strengthen emotional regulation, communication skills, and classroom engagement.

At Piedmont United Family Services, we partner with families and schools to ensure students receive the support they need to succeed academically and emotionally.

Resilient students grow in environments where support and understanding are present.

Autism Acceptance Month

Topic: Celebrating Neurodiversity

April is Autism Acceptance Month, a time to celebrate neurodiversity and promote understanding and inclusion for individuals on the autism spectrum.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) affects how individuals communicate, interact socially, and experience the world around them. Every individual with autism has unique strengths, talents, and perspectives.

Ways we can promote acceptance:

✔ Practice patience and understanding
✔ Encourage inclusive environments in schools and communities
✔ Celebrate individual strengths and abilities
✔ Support families and caregivers

At Piedmont United Family Services, we are committed to supporting children and families through behavioral health services that promote growth, development, and emotional well-being.

Inclusion begins with awareness;and grows through acceptance.

How Parents Can Self-Regulate

🌱 From the desk of the Program Director: Stress is real, but so is support. Let’s build resilience from the inside out.

Children often learn how to respond to stress by watching the adults around them. When parents regulate their emotions, they model healthy coping skills for their children.

Helpful strategies for parents include:

• Pause and take slow, deep breaths before reacting
• Step away briefly to calm down when emotions are high
• Practice mindfulness or short moments of reflection
• Maintain routines that support emotional stability
• Give yourself grace! Parenting is not about perfection

When parents take care of their own emotional health, they strengthen the entire family system.

Self-regulation is not just self-care, it is family care.

Alcohol Awareness Month

Topic: Understanding Alcohol Use and Its Impact

April is Alcohol Awareness Month, which focuses on increasing understanding about alcohol misuse and encouraging individuals to seek support when needed.

Alcohol use can affect physical health, mental health, relationships, and overall well-being. For youth and adolescents, early exposure to alcohol can increase the risk of long-term substance use challenges.

Warning signs may include:

• Changes in mood or behavior
• Decline in school performance
• Isolation from family or friends
• Increased risk-taking behaviors

Early education, prevention, and support can make a significant difference.

Piedmont United Family Services works with families, youth, and community partners to promote healthy decision-making and provide behavioral health services that support long-term wellness.

If you or someone you know needs support, help is available and recovery is possible.

Trauma-Informed Care

🌱 From the desk of the Program Director: Stress is real, but so is support. Let’s build resilience from the inside out.

Not all struggles are visible. Trauma can impact how children, teens, and adults think, feel, and respond to the world around them.

Trauma-informed care focuses on understanding that behaviors may be a response to difficult experiences rather than simply “acting out.”

Key principles of trauma-informed care include:

• Creating safe and supportive environments
• Understanding triggers and emotional responses
• Building trust and empowerment
• Responding with compassion rather than judgment

At Piedmont United Family Services, our approach centers on meeting individuals where they are and helping them develop tools to heal, grow, and thrive.

Healing happens when people feel safe, supported, and understood.
