In Loving Memory of Gerald Compton Jr. 7/3/42 - 4/22/26
To know Gerald was to hear his signature phrase, “wide open” when you asked him how he was doing, Not just something he said, but something he lived his life by.
Born on July 3, 1942, Gerald was a man who loved deeply, laughed often, and never met a stranger. He had a way of making people feel welcome, seen, and right at home. It was how he faced life, how he loved his family, and how he showed up for everyone around him.
Gerald was preceded in death by his parents, Gerald and Gertrude Seay Compton, and his brothers, Connie Compton and J.B. Compton.
He leaves behind the love of his life and devoted wife of 50 years, Betty Worley Compton; his son, Christopher R Compton; his daughter, Jessica Compton Backus and her husband, Jonathan Backus; and his beloved granddaughter, Skylyn Rose, who brought him endless pride and joy.
He is also survived by his siblings Leon Compton, Travis Compton, Wesley Compton, Pam Compton, and Darlene Hagood (Rocky); sister-in-law, JoAnne Compton; along with a large extended family of in-laws, Judy W Hodges, Faye W Bollings, Linda W Cobbler (Wayne), Rena W Hunt, Donald (Satch) Worley Jr. (Joyce), Earl Worley, (Diane), nieces, nephews and special friend Chris Williams who will carry his memory forward.
Racing was more than a passion for Gerald, it was part of who he was. He spent many years racing modifieds, late model sportsman, and other divisions at tracks all across the East Coast. He loved the roar of the engines, the thrill of the track, and the friendships built along the way. He especially enjoyed racing on Friday the 13th, a day most people avoided, but for Gerald, it was just another chance to go “wide open”. He brought the same fearless spirit every time he hit the track. But more than anything, he loved the stories, the kind that come from living life full throttle, side by side with good people.
But if you asked Gerald what mattered most, it was always his family.
He loved Betty with a steady, unwavering devotion that only deepened over time. He was incredibly proud of his children and found so much joy in watching their lives unfold. And when it came to his granddaughter, Skylyn, there was nothing that brought out his smile faster. He loved spending time with them, talking about them, and sharing in their lives. If you spent any time with Gerald, you heard about them, and you probably heard him say, with a grin, that they had “good genes.” It was one of the many ways he showed just how much he loved them.
Gerald was the life of the party, the one who brought laughter, energy, and a sense of ease wherever he went. He didn’t just pass through life, he embraced it, made the most of it, and invited others to do the same. He lived boldly, loved fiercely, and left behind a legacy of memories, laughter, and stories that will be told for generations.
And if there’s one thing he would want us all to remember, it’s this, don’t hold back. Don’t wait. Live your life the same way he did…Wide open.
“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” - 2 Timothy 4:7
