One of the questions you should ask a potential doula is - what continuing education courses have you taken recently? It is extremely important to stay up to date with best practices and newest research. I'm spending my weekend getting the latest on Group B Strep, since one of my clients tested positive recently. I've really enjoyed the refresher!

Every Doula needs some real time off from time to time. Time when there is no chance of being called in and we can truly relax. I'm feeling so recharged and happy after having had the chance to spend some quality time with my family. My next recharge is scheduled for Christmastime, as such I will not be able to accept bookings for births in late December. But there are still some openings available for this fall, if you're interested in Doula support!

Our healthcare system is not always set up in a way that promotes whole body health. In the shuffle between the hospital, doctors' office, pediatrician and others the ball gets dropped sometimes. While doulas are not medical professionals, we see these gaps in care and teach our clients to advocate for themselves.
Yesterday I visited a client one week after the birth of her baby. I could tell by observing her that something was off. She's recovering wonderfully, but it looked like all the energy had been drained from her. It didn't look like new mom tired, there was something more. I asked whether all her bloodwork was okay upon discharge from the hospital and it turned out that her hemoglobin levels indicate moderete to severe post-partum anemia. She noted that nobody had given her any instructions as to whether she needs to do anything about it, or how one would go about fixing that. This is an example of the small ways the system can fail new moms.
Why is it so important to send families home with proper instructions on how to take care of themselves beyond wound care and newborn care?
Aside from being a physical health issue, systematic review of 27 studies shows that post-partum anemia increases the rate of post-partum depression by nearly 1.7 times! Iron supplementation is a simple fix and research shows that it effectively reduces symptoms of fatigue and depression. With everything else that is already going on in a new mom's life, we can't afford to miss things that are making it even harder.

This has been one busy week, babies have been arriving non stop since Wednesday! It still amazes me how no two labors are ever the same, I learn something new every time. Over the last few days I have been humbled and I have been very proud. But most of all I am thankful that I get to be a part of such a special moment in people's lives and call it a job. Thank you for trusting me with your birth experiences!

This package includes more meetings before and after birth as well as the use of Mama Tens Machine for no additional cost. Furthermore, all packages now include support initiating and establishing breastfeeding from a lactation consultant in training (me, yay!) as I'm finishing up my LC certification. 🥳

Sounds too good to be true? Unlike many things in life, this one really is that simple. Studies show that walks as short as 2 minutes after meals significantly help your body with managing glucose levels. If you're at risk for or have gestational diabetes, try it out! Maybe immediately after a meal could be your new time to take the dog for a walk, take a lap around your office or move that load of laundry to the dryer. Light activity for as little as 2 to 5 minutes lowers blood glucose levels in a statistically significant way. If you're up for it, try longer walks once a day!

Disclaimer: follow your doctor's advice for managing geststional diabetes. This should not be considered as medical advice.
