A Brave Bouvier on the Mend! 🐾
Meet Abigail, an 8-year-old Bouvier Des Flandres, who recently went through a serious health scare. During a routine dental procedure, her vet noticed unexpected bruising and bleeding gums, which was a sign that something was wrong. The procedure was stopped immediately, and Abigail was rushed to our Internal Medicine team.
🔬 Lab tests revealed a dangerously low platelet count, putting her at risk for serious bleeding. Our team of doctors and technicians performed several diagnostics to look for underlying causes of low platelets, including infectious disease testing, and imaging to assess for potential cancer with ultrasound, and x-rays. Thankfully, no underlying cause was identified, and Immune-Mediated Thrombocytopenia (ITP) was suspected. ITP is an auto-immune condition in which the body attacks and destroys platelets, an important cell in the body that is responsible for blood clot formation.
Abigail was started on immunosuppressive medications and antibiotics. Her platelets initially remained critically low, and Abigail remained hospitalized for monitoring and medications. Thankfully, with continued care, Abigail’s platelet count began to rise. By the next day, she was well enough to go home, and now, we’re thrilled to share that her platelets are back to normal! 🙌🎉
She’s feeling great, soaking up love from her dads and playing with her equally perfect brother, Huck. We’re so proud of Abigail and grateful for her amazing family, whose love and support helped her through every moment.
