Therapy Thursday đź’ˇ
One of the biggest goals in ABA is teaching functionally equivalent replacement behaviors, or in simpler terms, teaching a better behavior that meets the same need.
Every behavior happens for a reason. A child may be trying to get attention, ask for help, escape a task, or access something they want.
Instead of only focusing on stopping the challenging behavior, we teach a more appropriate way to communicate that same need.
For example:
Instead of throwing items to escape a task, teaching “I need a break”
Instead of yelling for attention, teaching how to appropriately ask for attention
The replacement behavior has to work better and faster for the child than the challenging behavior.
At Bright Futures ABA, we focus on teaching skills that help children communicate effectively, build independence, and succeed across home, school, and the community.
