Ranken Jordan is proud to Respiratory Therapist Preston, our 2025 PHIL Award winner!

The PHIL award (Pulmonary Health and Illnesses of the Lungs) was established by the FACES foundation to recognize outstanding respiratory therapists who provide care and treatment for patients with respiratory illnesses. Sharman Lamka established the PHIL award as part of the FACES Foundation after her husband. Phillip C. Lamka, passed away from Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD.) Sharman wanted to establish a way of acknowledging the valuable role that respiratory therapists play in the lives of patients with life-threatening pulmonary illnesses.
Thanks to the work of Preston and the rest of our all star team, our patients and families breathe easier. 🫁

Congrats Preston! We are grateful for the profound impact respiratory therapists like you have on our community! 🎉 Check out our careers page for opportunities join in our mission! rankenjordan.org/careers/

It’s so we’re spotlighting one of our newest OTs here at Ranken Jordan: Madelyn Hubbs.

Born without an arm, Madelyn has turned what some would see as a limitation into a powerful asset. As a child, Madelyn received occupational therapy to help her adapt and thrive. Those experiences inspired her to become an occupational therapist (OT) herself. Now as an OT at Ranken Jordan, Madelyn is helping patients and their families learn to advocate for themselves, embrace their differences, and celebrate every milestone.

Ranken Jordan is eternally grateful for compassionate, empowering team members like Madelyn who embody our philosophy every day.

A hospital stay should be about more than treatment. For kids, it should also be a place to play, learn, and live—because childhood cannot wait for discharge. That belief drives our model.

Our new peer-reviewed paper in “Children,” co-authored by Chief Medical Officer Dr. Nick Holekamp, Claire Wallace, PhD, and Patrick Hogan, MPH, outline the negative effects of prolonged hospitalization for children with complex medical needs and how our unique care philosophy is specifically designed to diminish those effects.

Here are five takeaways the team wants everyone to take away from the paper:

🏥 Prolonged hospitalization puts a heavy strain on families.
🧠 Hospital settings can slow a child’s growth and development.
🎨 Care Beyond the Bedside helps kids stay active, engaged, and connected.
👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Creating spaces for families to spend time together supports healing.
🧩 Hospitals everywhere must prioritize keeping kids stimulated.

“Julie has been invaluable in allowing the kids to experience normalcy and connection during their hospital stay, especially for the older kids who sometimes are a little more closed off and have a hard time opening up. Now they’re able to do that through art.” - Katie Noll, Grief and Family Support Specialist at

Ranken Jordan’s model comes alive in the art room with Julie Villhard. Whether it’s a paralyzed 9-year-old painting through blinks, or a toddler creating syringe-spray art so that medical tools feel less scary, Ranken Jordan’s therapeutic art program proves creativity and play are essential to recovery.

We’re grateful to the Webster-Kirkwood Times Newspapers and Morrigan Carey for sharing Julie’s story and highlighting the healing power of art at Ranken Jordan: https://www.timesnewspapers.com/webster-kirkwoodtimes/care-beyond-the-bedside/article_3bec0aca-4a3a-4e93-a9d0-0d10a831337a.html
