When our nervous system senses danger or experiences prolonged stress, it can shift from a calm, rational state into survival mode — changing the way our brain and body respond.
These are known as the 4 F’s of Stress:
💥 Fight – The body prepares to defend.
Support with grounding: try tactile (touch), proprioceptive (body awareness), and vestibular (movement) activities.
🏃♀️ Flight – The body wants to run away or escape.
Help calm with deep breathing, visual focus, and soothing sounds to reconnect to the present.
❄️ Freeze – The body shuts down and disconnects.
Gently “unfreeze” through movement, compression, or hands-on sensory input.
🤝 Fawn – The body seeks to please or submit to avoid conflict.
Build confidence with predictable routines, fun activities, and celebrating strengths and independence!
Our bodies are always trying to keep us safe — learning these patterns can help children (and adults!) build awareness, regulation, and resilience. 💜
