Did you know? Some medications can damage your hearing.

Hearing loss or ear ringing (tinnitus) may be a side effect of ototoxic drugs. Common culprits include NSAIDs like aspirin and certain blood pressure medications.

Some effects are temporary, but others may be permanent—so it’s important to pay attention.

👉 Always report new hearing changes to your doctor, especially if you’ve recently started a new medication.

Always exciting to see manufacturers come together for the good of the patient :) Starkey hearing aids and MED EL cochlear implants can now work together!

MED-EL and Starkey Hearing have joined forces to introduce DualSync, offering bimodal users an elevated streaming experience.

With a MED-EL audio processor on one ear and a Starkey hearing aid on the other, users can enjoy seamless audio connectivity and synchronized sound directly
from their iPhones.

Starting on July 1, an update will be available on users' AudioKey 3 app that will set up the hearing devices to work together as one, so Apple products can easily stream to both at the same time.

This list is certainly not exhaustive! However, a new study from Lau et al. (2025) revealed an unusual factor associated with hearing loss—pregnancy.

Hearing aid technology is constantly evolving and the use of AI (Artificial Intelligence) is becoming more and more prevalent. AI's contribution to better hearing in the presence of background noise is a game-changer for patients.

---HOT TIPS for Surviving Christmas with a hearing loss---

Cut down on background noise. Turn off the background music and television!

Make sure areas are well lit. No need for mood lighting! Brighter lighting makes it easier to see people’s faces and catch non-verbal cues that help with communication.

Keep sight lines open. Remove large centerpieces or scale back on holiday decorations that block sight lines, so that guests can see one another clearly.

Arrange for circular seating. Smaller round tables ensure faces are visible for lipreading. Avoid sitting where you face a window or a distracting background, making it harder to see people’s faces and read lips.

Educate Guests on Hearing Loss Etiquette

Let people know your communication needs. Self-advocating is the key. People in general may not realize you have hearing loss. Don’t be shy to make your communication needs known. Others want to have meaningful conversations with you too and will be happy to follow your guidance.

Enlist help. At gatherings, I like to have a hearing friend or family member help remind others of my communication needs. Strategies like facing me when speaking, keeping hands away from their mouth, and tapping me before talking, are extremely helpful, so I can be part of the discussion.
