⁣In case you are still wondering whether these WHI investigators are motivated primarily to inform or to spread fear, consider this bit of evidence that might tilt your answer. In their latest 2025 paper, “Menopausal hormone therapy and breast cancer findings,”(1) Chlebowski and Aragaki include a paragraph directing readers to another of their papers, this one reporting an increased risk of ovarian cancer in the women taking estrogen alone. (9) Pardon? Ovarian cancer? Why are they in a worry about ovarian cancer in a paper on breast cancer, especially since their ovarian cancer claim is just as flimsy? They neglected to mention that there was no increased risk of ovarian cancer in HRT users—until they rummaged around in the numbers and eked out a puny difference of 7 per 1,000 HRT users compared to 4 per 1,000 of women on placebo. But that method, called “data mining,” is frowned upon by serious statisticians as being unreliable. You can use it to generate a hypothesis, not to confirm one. ⠀
