A life-changing diagnosis like breast cancer can evoke feelings of fear, uncertainty and hopelessness. At Mosaic Medical Center – Maryville, a team approach guides patients through their entire journey from screening to the end goal of survivorship.
One special member of this team is Mosaic Medical Center – Maryville Breast Cancer Nurse Navigator, Kacey Logsdon, RN. The nurse navigator program began in 2020 to provide individualized guidance to patients and their families to help them better understand the different steps and tests required to make a final treatment plan. The nurse navigator becomes one point of contact to answer any questions or concerns, alleviating a lot of stress for the patient and family.
“The breast cancer diagnosis, like other cancer diagnoses, is very stressful and requires multi-specialty disciplines, procedures, and tests before we come to a treatment decision,” says Rony Abou-Jawde, MD. “The nurse navigator has a very important role in assisting patients from the minute they get an abnormal mammogram, to the time they ultimately see the multi-specialty team for decision-making and plan of treatment.”
Besides becoming the patient’s health care advocate, one of the biggest wins the team has seen is the reduction of time between treatment and diagnosis.
“We want to ensure our patients that we are here for them, every step of the way,” says Kacey. “When we can take away the overwhelming burden of coordinating appointments and care while giving them the resources they need, our patients can truly focus on healing.”
