✨ Baby Bodywork: Why It Matters ✨

Did you know body tension can affect your baby’s feeding, positioning, head shape (plagiocephaly), breathing, and sleep?

One of the most effective ways to support your baby’s comfort and development is through bodywork (manual therapy).

🤍 What is bodywork?
Hands-on techniques like gentle massage, myofascial release, and craniosacral work that help release tension and allow your baby’s body to move, feed, and grow more efficiently.

👶 How body tension can show up:
• Difficulty latching or feeding
• Reflux, gas, or constipation
• Head turning preference or flat spots
• Poor tolerance for tummy time
• Shallow breathing
• Restless sleep

🌿 Benefits of baby bodywork:
✔️ Reduced whole-body tension
✔️ Improved feeding & digestion
✔️ Better breathing mechanics
✔️ Increased comfort with tummy time
✔️ Support for head shape & positioning
✔️ Better sleep (for baby and parents!)

Your baby’s body works as a whole — when tension is released, everything works better.

📍 Early support can make a big difference.

Let’s Talk Torticollis!

Early intervention can make ALL the difference — & this little guy is a prime example of why!

This sweet baby has just about graduated from therapy after 3 months of treatments focusing on:
• Improving cervical range of motion and mobility
• Proper head and body positioning
• Lots of soft tissue + bodywork to reduce tension
• Strengthening the neck & trunk
• Tolerating tummy time

Mom brought him in at just 4 weeks old after noticing a flat spot & increased neck tension affecting baby’s feeding. At that point both mom & lactation decided it would be a good idea to seek an evaluation!

(Would you believe me if I told you her pediatrician just brushed off her concerns🙃) - Mama knows best!

And now? We have an incredible success story & a prime example of why EARLY intervention, the right team, & self advocacy is key!

Torticollis is becoming increasingly more common and too often parents are waiting too long to seek treatment. In fact, with the right treatment early on your baby will NOT need a helmet. Seeking therapy is a conservative route with effective outcomes. & the earlier you start, the better those outcomes will be.

📊 Research shows:
Before 1 month old:
→ 99% excellent outcomes within just 2 months of therapy
1–3 months old:
→ 89% success rate, often needing up to 6 months of therapy
3–6 months old:
→ 62% success rate, often requiring 7+ months
6–12 months old:
→ Only 18% success, often requiring 9+ months and increased chance of needing a helmet

The longer torticollis is left untreated, the higher the likelihood of:
• Plagiocephaly
• Facial asymmetry
• Delayed gross motor milestones
• Persistent muscle imbalance
• Chronic discomfort as your child grows
• Poor feeding

Early treatment doesn’t just fix the their head shape, it supports:
✔ Tummy time
✔ Rolling
✔ Sitting
✔ Crawling
✔ Head control
✔ Decreases tension - Improves ROM
✔ Symmetrical development
✔ Comfort during feeding + sleeping
& so much more!

If you have noticed a flat spot, tension causing a head tilt or discomfort, trouble feeding on one side, or that your baby is always looking one way - don’t wait. Please reach out and get your baby the right support!

When primitive reflexes don’t integrate, they can impact so much more than we realize, such as:

✨ Balance & Coordination
✨ Attention & Focus (difficulty following directions, hyperactivity, lack of motivation)
✨ Reading & Writing
✨ Fine & Gross Motor Skills
✨ Oculomotor & Visual Perception
✨ Low Muscle Tone & Posture
✨ Crossing Midline & Bilateral Coordination
✨ Sensory Processing & Emotional Regulation

What I wish more parents knew is that even one retained reflex can have a ripple effect across multiple developmental areas. Your child isn’t just “difficult”, they may have a disconnect between their neurological system and their body.

BUT the good news is, with the right support and exercises, these reflexes can be integrated so that your child can thrive!

If your child has any difficulty with these areas, that are affecting how they learn, grow, or engage in daily tasks feel free to reach out for a free consultation to chat about how we can help support them!

Wondering If Your Child Might Need an OT Evaluation?

Trust me: If you’ve ever found yourself googling, “Is this ….. normal?”. I promise ; you’re not alone.

At Bite Size Pediatric Therapy, my goal is to help families better understand their child’s development and uncover the why behind any challenges you may be facing.

Here are some common reasons parents should seek an OT evaluation:

👶🏼 Delayed milestones
🧠 Show signs of sensory processing or retained reflex challenges
🍽️ Struggles with feeding, oral-motor skills, or transitioning to solids
✏️ Has difficulties in school — handwriting, attention, or focus
💪 Appears clumsy, low-tone, or easily frustrated during tasks

If your child has any difficulties with any of these categories - feel free to reach out for a free consult to discuss your concerns!

Evaluations can provide clarity, peace of mind, and a plan to help your child thrive, I focus on treating the whole child through play-based, evidence-driven therapy tailored to their unique needs.

Don’t “wait it out”, it costs $0 to consult a professional about your concerns!

✨ Welcome back to another series of, I’ve tried a million teethers so you don’t have to!

Teethers should be introduced around 3 months of age. Once you notice your child starts mouthing at their hands and toys, they’re telling you they’re ready.

Contrary to what most believe, teethers aren’t just for teething or “relief”. They are vital for promoting pre-feeding and oral motor skills.

Yep! You heard me! The best way to prepare a baby to be a good eater is oral play. It really sets the foundation for eating—and having the right teethers makes all the difference.

Benefits of Teethers
⭐️ They improve jaw strength (vital for mouth closure and chewing)
⭐️ Encourage tongue lateralization (required for moving food around in mouth)
⭐️ Practice hand to mouth coordination (required for self feeding no matter what route you choose)
⭐️ Desensitizes gag reflex
⭐️ Helps promote oral mapping
⭐️ Provides sensory feedback (VITAL for starting solids)

You want to maximize the benefits of teethers early on so that when solids are introduced, your child’s feeding abilities will become more instinctive. You’ll often hear that feeding is an innate behavior and as a feeding therapist that frustrates me to hear because the reality is, that not every child can just jump into feeding and thrive.

But, that’s why I’m here! I hope to help give you all the tips and tricks to prepare and set baby up with the best foundation possible as they grow!

If you or your baby are struggling with where to go or what to do, feel free to shoot me a DM and we can get you scheduled for a free consult🫶🏼

We often expect kids to stay calm, focused, and regulated…
in classrooms that are loud, unpredictable, overstimulating, or emotionally unsafe. 💛

Regulation doesn’t happen in chaos — it happens in safety.
If we want kids to manage their emotions, we have to create environments that help them feel safe enough to try.
