January is Cervical Health Awareness Month!

More than 14,000 women in the United States are diagnosed with invasive cervical cancer each year, but the disease is preventable with vaccination and appropriate screening.
• Cervical cancer is among a number of cancers that can be caused by infections with pathogens – bacteria, viruses, and parasites.
• Cervical cancer is almost always caused by an infection with the Human papillomavirus (HPV). HPV is the most common sexually transmitted infection.
• A safe, effective vaccine is available to prevent HPV infection. It's so effective that the American Cancer Society has stated that HPV vaccination is cancer prevention.
• For women with HIV, the observance is an important reminder of their greater risk of cervical cancer and the importance of routine screening.
